I started my undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Brownsville where I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in computer science. My fascination with the philosophy of mathematics, turned me in the direction of a Master’s degree in pure mathematics at the aforementioned institution by the end of 2008. After that, I attended Iowa State University where I was granted a Master’s degree in applied mathematics by the end of 2012.
I began tutoring and teaching math at a learning center in Brownsville, TX in October of 2006. There, I tutored children of all ages, especially high school students. I was also an instructor for SAT and ACT test preparation. Occasionally, college students would also stop by for help with math.
On August of 2009 I was accepted to a graduate program at Iowa State University. While I was a graduate student there, I was assigned diverse teaching duties up until the time of my graduation. I have taught courses like calculus I, II, and III. I have held recitations for business calculus courses as well. I also worked for the university's Academic Success Center tutoring students in algebra, trigonometry, analytic geometry, linear algebra, game theory, and calculus. Additionally, I did tutoring on my own when possible. Currently, I am a Mathematics Instructor at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, TX. I currently teach Elementary, Intermediate, and College Algebra; and Calculus II.
As a father of three children, I continue learning and improving myself to be their role-model. I believe that ethical values, professionalism, and respect are the base to become a better human being, thus better at what one does. I like exercising, reading, writing, and I keep myself aware of current events in our world and in our country. I practice my rights as a citizen but also take care of my responsibilities.
I know time is valuable so I hope you can find the time to review my credentials and qualifications. If you think I would be a good fit for your tutoring needs, I would be glad to have the opportunity to serve you.

Jose's subjects
Algebra 1
I have broad knowledge of Algebra and all its concepts. I have taken many undergraduate and graduate courses like Abstract Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Algebraic Graph Theory, and more. Of course these are high level mathematics but they require thorough knowledge of basic Algebra. I have also tutored for many students on the subject.
Algebra 2
I have broad knowledge of Algebra 2 and all its concepts. I have taken many undergraduate and graduate courses like Abstract Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Algebraic Graph Theory, and more. Of course these are high level mathematics but require thorough knowledge of basic, high school, and college Algebra. I have also tutored for many students on the subject.
Calculus
I have taught Calculus courses at the University level in recent years. I can teach all levels of calculus and is the subject that I enjoy teaching more than any other. I have also taught Business Calculus and Calculus for non-math majors both in the classroom and online.
Microsoft Excel
Throughout my studies and work experience I have used Excel in many occasions. I even took a class titled "Integrating technology into math" at UT Brownsville where I learned many features of Excel and the use of formulas to generate spreadsheets.
General Computer
I am very computer literate. I have a Bachelor's degree in computer science. I have written computer programs using different computer languages and operating systems.
Geometry
I have tutored Geometry and Analytic Geometry in the past. I use Geometry (all mathematicians do) on a daily basis in my teachings and research. I have taken Advanced Geometry classes in graduate school.
Prealgebra
I have two Master's degrees in mathematics, very basic math like Pre-Algebra is of not difficult for me even when I have not tutored on this subject specifically in the past.
Precalculus
Precalculus encompasses different subject of mathematics in preparation for Calculus courses. Being a mathematician for 8 years, and having taking a precalculus class in the past gives me an edge on being able to tutor and teach this particular course.
Spanish
Spanish is my first language. I studied in Mexico up until the age of 16. I keep myself knowledgeable about grammar and punctuation in the Spanish language. I use it in my daily life around 50 percent of the time.
Trigonometry
I have tutored Trigonometry for the past 6 years. This has helped me improve my knowledge and experience teaching the subject. I know most of the concepts, trig identities, and trig formulas by heart.
Statistics
Currently, I am a math professor at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, TX. Among the various subjects I teach, statistics is one of them. In addition to teaching statistics, I had taken classes myself during my college years. Moreover, I have direct communication with statiticians (friends/acquaintances) all over the world.
SAT Math
I have tutored and been an instructor for SAT math in the past. I am very familiar with the format of the test and with the mathematical content. I have instructed both individual students and groups of students, generally high school seniors.
Probability
I have taken probability classes in the past, as an undergraduate student. As a person of mathematics, I use probability often in other classes and in my own research. I keep myself knowledgeable of probability concepts and methods to solve different problems.
ACT Math
I have tutored for ACT preparation in the past so I am familiar with the exam's format and with the content of the math part. I have tutored nurses, firemen, and students trying to pass this exam.
Discrete Math
I am a math professor at Del Mar College. I teach both discrete math and analysis. I have taken many discrete math courses myself in the past throughout my college education.
Linear Algebra
I took two different, graduate level, linear algebra classes from two different instructors. I have tutored linear algebra for a group of three students. I wrote a thesis on Quantum Information Theory which heavily relies on knowledge of advanced linear algebra.
Logic
As a mathematician, I am very familiar with the subject. I have taken logic classes but have never taught or tutored logic. Logic is the basic knowledge for all pure mathematicians, without it I wouldn't have two master's degrees in math.
Mathematica
I know my way around the program as I have used it many times as a grad student. I am familiar with syntax and use the documentation center often to produce the desired math programs.
