I am a twenty-three year old student at The University of Texas in Arlington with hopes of attending dental school here in Texas in the near future. I am finishing my last semester at UTA and am pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Biological Science. I am absolutely captivated by science and am very fortunate to have uncovered my passion at such a young age. So often nowadays, courses demand that students take in as much information as possible only to regurgitate it for the test that is right around the corner. This is tragic because many times, students do not ever experience the thrill of truly understanding certain subjects. Instead, they just memorize, memorize, memorize.
At UTA I have tutored many of my classmates and helped them comprehend subject matter that can be difficult to grasp. My approach is to focus on an appreciation of each subject that will help catalyze a learning that demonstrates true understanding -- not mere memorization. This past June, I took the Dental Admissions Test (tests over Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Perceptual Ability, Reading Comprehension, and Quantitative Reasoning) and scored a 23, which translates to scoring in the top 2% of all test takers. I am very confident in my understanding of science and want to help others learn to appreciate how exhilarating of an experience learning the subject can be. There is a synchronicity between the various areas of science that exists and I want to help my subjects see this more clearly.
Finally, my other passion is teaching others. I have always found it fulfilling when I am able to help another understand material that makes a subject more enjoyable. A saying that has always stuck with me is, "The best violin player in the world has never picked up a violin." I am convinced that so many people would be not see certain subjects as a burden if they simply put more energy into understanding the concepts rather than memorizing the specifics. Learning takes hard work but the rewards are precious and lifelong. Ultimately we are judged by our performance in the classroom, which is the basis for most tutoring but I hope that I can deliver the additional benefit of a deeper appreciation for the world we live in and the things we so often take for granted.
I took Biostatistics in the Spring of 2013 at the University of Texas Arlington and received an A in the course. I tutored other classmates before every test for the course. I also took AP Statistics in high school at Colleyville Heritage High School and scored a 4 on the AP Test. Having dealt with the subject twice, I am comfortable with and understand the concepts underlying college level statistics.
I completed both Organic Chemistry I & II at the University of Texas at Arlington with a grade of A in both. Additionally, I took the Dental Admissions Test earlier this summer in June and scored a 29, which translates to a perfect score (top percentile). I have tutored many of my classmates during my involvement with the subject.
