“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” I believe that statement is incorrect since learning is something we do every day. As a teacher, I believe learning is a powerful tool that can guide us through life. I am passionate about my work, and I enjoy teaching others new things. I recognize that every student has potential, and I delight in exploring and developing it.
American Sign Language (ASL) is the focus of my learning and now teaching career. This language has been a part of my life for ten years, and I am now fluent. My past experiences include: interpreting at my church, taking several classes at local schools and colleges, and teaching the language to young children. I am passionate about my career and am constantly seeking out new ways to improve my skill.
I can instruct my students in the basics of the language along with the adjoining culture. ASL cannot be learned a knowledge of Deaf culture. Saying that would be akin to stating a game of football is complete without the play book. The culture explains the rules and expectations of Deaf people. I have found Deaf people to be warm and welcoming. ASL is a language unlike any other and is fun and interesting to learn. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you and introducing you to the Deaf world.
American Sign Language or ASL is the language that is used by most Deaf and hard of hearing persons in and around the United States. It is a language unlike any other with its own syntax and grammatical rules. I believe the culture of the Deaf is crucial to understanding them and their language. These tools will help you communicate with the Deaf.
Although ASL is offered in many high schools today, most people do not realize they are being taught a “signed system.” This communication style is simply a mode of communication and not a real language.
I started learning how to sign ten years ago and am now proficient in the language. Even though I am not certified, I can teach the language. In the past I have interpreted in my church as well as taken classes in ASL. I have also taught parts of the language to young children. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you.
