My skills in English and test taking are top-notch. I would love to help students of any age with language skills. I'm qualified to tutor in grammar, vocabulary, writing, reading, SAT and GED testing. Language can be fun! I have a Masters degree in Art, and can also help with Art History and up to college level art subjects.
I have 12 years experience teaching in schools, every one of which gave plenty of real life opportunity to work with ADD/ADHD students. In addition I have participated in the following trainings: Professional Education Course in Special Education, University of California Riverside, 3 credits, 2003. Placentia/Yorba Linda School District Special Education Protocol one day training for Substitute teachers, 1999. Living with Attention Deficit Disorder, one day workshop, Burlington, VT 1996.
To me, Art is the most exciting and interesting subject there is and I'd like to share my love of color and design in art history. My background in drawing, painting, and sculpture includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1979.
For seven years, I worked as Adjunct Professor of Art at Cerro Coso Community College in Bishop, California. In my capacity as instructor in a thriving studio program in Ceramics, I also studied and presented on the worldwide history of ceramics.
My most recent formal teaching experience was a year of teaching art at Bishop Union High School. Art historical background was used to inform the students' understanding and appreciation for the subject.
I later embarked on a trip to Europe to visit the great museums and cities, and study ancient and modern art. Visiting the caves of southern France, the ancient stone monuments of Britain, and contemporary art museums in Holland are a few of the memorable sites and sights where I have personal experience. Other areas of study include courses specializing in Renaissance Art and Surrealism, along with my personal interests in 20th Century American Art and Post-Impressionism.
Language and Literacy is a Master's level class that I took at New York University. In 2003, I attended a professional level course in teaching reading to qualify for my California teaching credential. I have worked with students of various ages in a range of subjects as a substitute teacher for about 8 years, and I have taken every opportunity to help with English, as it is the one subject in which students must be competent in order to succeed in other subjects.
I received a Bachelor's of Fine Art from Maryland Institute College of Art in 1979. Since then, I have shown and sold my art painted in oil, pastel, acrylic and watercolor. I have painted sets for three plays, produced three painted murals and a wildlife-themed ceramic tile mural. I would be happy to share images of my work with prospective students.
I have 12 years experience teaching in schools. Reading is an important part of the curriculum, even in my main subject of Art. Plus, I have substitute taught in many English classes, and taken Masters' and professional level courses in literacy and teaching reading.
I have an MA in Art Education. My professional coursework includes Methods in Teaching Reading, and Language and Literacy. I taught Art to 4th and 5th grade students for three years, and these classes always included vocabulary and writing assignments. My scores in reading and writing have always been in the top 10%, including professional tests at the state level for teaching basic skills, SAT scores, and in graduate school.
