I have an MBA focusing in international business, and I worked as a college instructor for some time. I've taught many different subjects, and I like to tutor on the side. Overall, I try to have a few different methods of instruction lined up for each subject so that I have a logical progression in mind as to how to help each student, and I like to get to know each person so that I can tailor things to their needs as much as possible.
I spent 2 years as a small business consultant, where I showed current and potential small business owners how to organize their finances, write business and marketing plans, and just figure out what their major focus should be. I'm also an entrepreneur, and I understand how hard it can be to fit lessons in with everything else that might be going on in life, so I try to be as flexible as possible.
My formal education:
MBA International Business
BBA Marketing, Music Industry Studies, University Honors
I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in business-related fields, and I worked as a business tutor at my university while I was in graduate school. In addition, I'm a former small business owner myself, so I've seen how these concepts work in practice as well as in theory.
I am a former first chair clarinet and have played for over a decade. I also used to help others with the instrument. I have taken university courses in music theory and participated in activities to improve sight reading and ear training.
I've had plenty of experience teaching geometry, including a summer I spent helping kids with preparation for their LEAP exams. Geometry can be very fun, but it has to be presented in such a way that the student can really "get" it.
Literature is a great interest of mine. I am especially fond of literary analysis and find Frye's theory concerning archetypes very interesting.
I have a BBA in marketing with University Honors and an MBA. I have done a lot of work in marketing research, which is my passion. I've done marketing consulting work with the Louisiana Small Business Development Center, helping small business owners find various ways to make their companies more visible. I also used to promote for a major record label.
I have passed the PRAXIS I and II for math/math content, grades 4-12. I am very familiar with the PRAXIS exam and the typical "exam shortcuts" of which one can make use for these tests. I know test anxiety can be an issue, particularly with these exams, but good preparation helps, and there are ways to make the anxiety more manageable.
I currently teach a course that involves various aspects of public speaking, and I provide feedback and coaching to my students on the presentations they give. In addition, I do a great deal of public speaking myself and have also done so in the past.
I have both experience with public speaking and experience teaching public speaking. I know that it's said that people's #1 fear is speaking in public, and I try to come up with different tips to help with projection, organization, and pacing. I can also assist with particular types of speeches and help create strategies to reduce anxiety.
I have taught a study skills courses at the college level in the past and am happy to assist others with finding study methods that will work for them.
