I have been teaching writing and rhetoric at the college level for over three years, and it's by far one of the most rewarding jobs I've ever had. I aim to help my students not only succeed in their academic careers, but also feel comfortable when engaging with texts and composition in their everyday lives. If you engage me as a tutor, I will push you to your full potential!

My specialty is analytical writing, so if you are writing a research paper, an argument paper, or a literary analysis, I'm the tutor for you. I'm able to help you at any point in the writing process, from brainstorming to editing. I won't merely "fix" your paper, but help you to develop strategies to become a better writer and self-editor, so that YOU can eventually see the problems you frequently develop and fix them independently. This means that once you've moved on, you'll still be able to produce effective, A-worthy papers without me.

My academic background is in literary analysis, so if you're struggling with a literature or English class, I can give you the basic tools you need to pick apart fiction and/or poetry and say something interesting about it. This can actually be a fun process, once you've learned how to do it well!

I aim to make rhetoric, reading, and composition relatable to my students. I don't want my classes or my tutoring to be boring or to feel disconnected from your life. I will do my best to make the material interesting and something you can care about. My teaching philosophy is that if you want to learn a skill well, you apply it in all areas of your life. Learning how to write a Facebook post, an email, or a text more effectively can help you in your essay-for-school writing skills! I care about you meeting your goals, whether they are to earn a certain grade in a class, create a convincing argument in an essay, or just become a better writer.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I majored in English in undergrad and then went on to earn my master's degree in the subject. I graduated from my graduate program with a 4.0. I specialized in science fiction, rhetoric, and fan studies. I have also been teaching English (first year composition and rhetoric) at the college level for over three years.

Grammar

I am well-versed in edited American English (what many people call "proper" or "standard" English). I can help students become more familiar with the standards of EAE without making them feel that their dialect, or patterns of language, are inferior or incorrect. I have a basic background in linguistics.

Literature

I studied literature at the undergraduate and graduate level, 6 years total. I specialize in science fiction, young adult literature, and fantasy. However, I'm well-versed in the "classics" and analyzing any type of fiction.

Proofreading

As an undergraduate, I was the go-to person among my friends to proofread essays, particularly if the person was not overly familiar with edited American English (or what some call "standard" English). I am capable of helping with grammar and larger issues like content and organization. I teach writing, so this type of proofreading comes second nature to me.

Reading

I have been reading my entire life, but I've also always been good at the "reading" sections of standardized tests. They are two very different skills, and I can help with both. For comprehension and instilling a love of reading, I am able to help students find what they love to read and connect it to their lives and experience, so it feels relevant.

Writing

I have taught writing at the college level for over three years. My students are very happy with my class, and most report improvement in writing even if they don't do well in the course. I also tutored high school students in writing for a year with a tutoring company.

Very efficient and understanding — One lesson so far, but my daughter seems very pleased. The timed persuasive essays are challenging for anyone, but Courtney seems to give the impression she can get my daughter through this. ...
