All of Rose-Anne’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Rose-Anne’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

Biology

Short version:
Biology is my most active tutoring subject. I have tutored students in general, cell, and molecular biology. I also frequently work with genetics students.

Longer version:
I have a PhD in biology (neuroscience with a focus on molecular biology, genetics, and behavior) and ten years of research experience. My undergraduate major was in biochemistry, including several biology classes. I am very comfortable teaching students theory and practical application of biology.

Chemistry

I tutor students in general chemistry at the high school and college levels. I'm skilled at explaining the theory and application of chemistry. I offer a bridge between ideas (theory) and the problems that chemistry students must solve (application).

I majored in chemistry in college and have been tutoring students in general chemistry since March 2014. I am also building a library of great chemistry study resources and can offer these resources to my students. My library includes practice questions, several textbooks, on-line lessons, and on-line lectures.

Genetics

I love teaching genetics to my students. It's my favorite subject in biology. I have almost ten years of research experience in the field; I have taken several classes in genetics, including Molecular Genetics and Genes, Brains, and Behavior; and I earned a PhD in fruit fly genetics. My PhD thesis focused on how genes influence circadian and light-induced behavior in fruit flies. I have also worked in a worm lab, where we use genetics to understand cell signaling.

If you need a genetics tutor, I am here for you! I tutor students at all levels in genetics, from high school through the PhD level. I offer one-on-one attention and customized lessons to make this sometimes obscure subject tangible and easy to grasp.

Attention TAMU students: YES, I tutor Genetics 301 as taught by Dr. Ellison. I've worked with several students for this course, and my tutoring improves with each student. I can help you too!

Microsoft Excel

Need a short course in the power of Microsoft Excel? I can help! I work with this program every day and find it insanely useful. I've tutored several students in Excel, and they've walked away feeling much more confident and knowledgeable.

Philosophy

I have an undergraduate minor in philosophy from Albion College. As a tutor, my strength is in offering critical feedback on philosophy essays and analyses--I can tell you what's working in your paper and what to change to make it stronger. I'll offer you feedback in an encouraging, supportive environment such that you feel empowered to become a better thinker and a better writer.

In my work as a scientist, I use logic and academic arguments to create and test hypotheses. My philosophy background has been a valuable tool in that line of work. The branch of philosophy with which I am most familiar is epistemology, the study of knowledge.

Writing

I work with PhD students and science PhDs to help them improve their technical writing. I understand the importance of clear, concise writing to communicate technical ideas.

My goal is to help students develop their own writing style in polished, professional English. I focus on the deep structure and logical underpinnings of technical writing to illustrate how an argument is made using theory and data. I also walk students through the small details that can be difficult to master, such as use of articles and pronouns in English. My tutoring sessions make use of published pieces and my students' in-progress manuscripts.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
