I grew up in the Netherlands, and Dutch was my first language. Through frequent trips to the Netherlands and family connections, I have maintained my language skills. I have translated technical essays for Cornell University.
I have a Master's degree in Elementary Education and 20 years' experience teaching grades 1- 5. For the last ten years, I have tutored students in every grade level in a variety of subjects. I currently teach 4th grade and specialize in Writing.
During the last twenty years, I have taught 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade math in a classroom setting. My students have performed exceptionally well on state exams such as STAAR and TAKS, and as a result, I have been employed as a math tutor in all these grade levels for ten years. I also taught a special test taking (STAAR or TAKS) camp for ten years.
As a Writing teacher, I have a great deal of experience with English grammar. At my school, I teach two STAAR preparation Writing classes annually, and have done so for fourteen years. I have a Master's in Education, have written and published articles, and have taught extra curricular Writing classes to fourth grade students.
I have a Master's degree in Education, specializing in Reading. I have taught Reading for twenty years, have attended workshops with renowned Reading specialists from Australia, the USA and Europe, and attended a symposium on multi-lingual Reading Education in Belize. I teach an annual STAAR (or in previous years, TAKS) Reading camp.
As a Reading and Writing specialist, I am very proficient in spelling. As someone who learned English as a second language in Middle School, (I came from the Netherlands) I had to quickly learn good spelling in order to blend into the school system. I am familiar with a variety of spelling practices (such as Scientific Spelling) and have taught the subject for twenty years.
I have been a teacher for twenty years, and during that time have helped many students to organize, simplify, and personalize their assignments so they are able to study more easily and effectively. I have worked extensively with ELL students and have helped them understand how to adjust to an English language curriculum, and how to identify main ideas and supporting details in all areas of study.
Understanding vocabulary is an integral part of understanding English. I teach Reading and Writing courses, and have taught ESL classes (I am ESL certified). I am working with several ELL students, helping them to comprehend the English language and helping them read and write proficiently in English.
At my elementary school, I am a writing specialist, and teach two fourth grade classes in order to prepare them for the STAAR test. I also teach a weekly STAAR Writing camp. I have written and published several articles, have translated a children's book, and have attended and taught numerous writing workshops, such as Capital City Writes.
