To truly understand biology, one must learn how atoms combine to form molecules and how molecules build larger macromolecular structures that organize to create living cells. This involves wrapping your head around the core principles of chemistry. I specialize in tutoring high school and college students struggling to grasp how chemistry relates to biology.
For over 10 years I have invested a considerable amount of my academic career learning how atoms emerge into living cells. Along this path I have tutored many students in chemistry and math, and in the laboratory. I have many textbooks at my disposal ranging from General Chemistry to Microbiology and Genetics. Additionally, I can provide insights that show students how to augment personal meetings with the use of online resources like university websites, databases, and video services like Youtube.
I tutor from an adaptive learning style as close to real-time as feasible without the use of complex algorithms. My system is a dynamic "ping-pong like" back and forth relationship that requires the student’s input as much as mine. I aim to move through material as a mediator or facilitator to students’ own learning by focusing attention on core principles (usually tough to understand) and remaining responsive during periods that we do not meet. For instance, I will be able to assist a student struggling with a homework assignment. To this end, we can arrange the use of social media, chat, video hangouts, or email without extra charge to navigate these problems.
The first session is always free and informal. I like to get a sense of the student’s current level of understanding and acquire obligatory materials like syllabi or previous tests that might be useful for future engagements. As more time is clocked, I will encourage students to do work outside of meetings as repetition and practice can help solidify understanding of tough concepts. I do not think extensive testing is necessary for tutoring, however, short assessments are given at the beginning and end of each session to keep each other honest. These will occupy roughly 10 minutes of each session. I will try my hardest to be as flexible and accommodating as possible which means that I will avoid using strict lesson plans. Like mentioned above, I aim to facilitate the students own learning and can do so by being influential in their ability to identify and digest core subject matter.
I graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in Biochemistry and achieved a perfect 4.0 with a M.Sc. in Biochemistry. During my Master’s I received a scholarship, fellowship, and the distinguished title of Outstanding Graduate Student. I am co-author on several peer-reviewed research articles and scored in the 95th percentile on the American Chemical Society Cumulative Biochemistry Exam.
