I am a PhD-level scientist with in-depth training in the natural sciences and a long history of teaching and tutoring at the elementary through graduate level. My specialty is biology. I also have experience tutoring chemistry, math through algebra, and mentoring science fair projects at all levels. I am a highly experienced writer and editor who can coach students to improve their writing skills. My goal is to teach kids techniques so they can learn and master material on their own through critical thinking, not memorization.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I am a Ph.D. biologist familiar with all aspects of general biology and I have in-depth knowledge of ecology. I have tutored and taught biology at many levels.

English

I am a professional editor with experience proofreading and editing a wide range of technical and non-technical subject matters, from journal articles to dissertations to material for a general audience.

Study Skills

I have many years of teaching experience, from middle school through graduate school. In addition, I have many years of tutoring experience covering elementary through college-aged students. Both my teaching and tutoring have emphasized mastery of knowledge through critical thinking and inquiry as opposed to memorization. Teaching study skills is just an extension of this approach.
