So you'd like to learn how to use one or more applications in Microsoft Office, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook? Well, I love working in them all and sharing my knowledge with others.
I've been working in MSOffice for over 15 years. My first experience was while working in the publications department of a state agency, where we used the most advanced features available. I have designed all sorts of documents, from complex spreadsheets, books, and presentations to the simplest of documents, such as a postcard invitation. I've designed and taught classes and provided technical support for all of the Office products.
I can teach you how to:
- Create v-lookups, if statements, conditional formatting, macros, charts, and more in Excel
- Create macros, tables of contents, custom paragraph and table styles, and templates (and much, much more) in Word
- Create templates; locate and insert graphics, movies, and sounds; edit clip art; use animations and transitions, and design fun and exciting presentations in PowerPoint
- Customize your email with a signature, sort/filter email to find things easily, or create folders and rules in Outlook
- Create basic database tables and reports in Access
My approach to tutoring is dependent upon your needs. I can design a one-time class based on a specific topic or need, or I can design a multi-class course with homework assignments for you to work on in your own time. I can accommodate any special request. I believe that people learn best when they do for themselves, so we'll take a hands-on approach. You'll receive handouts for future reference and a list of online resources to help you in the learning process.
I can teach you just about anything you want to learn in any of the major Microsoft Office products, and you'll love them once you learn them.
Desktop Publishing can be applied in many different software applications, but before you can start using the software you must know a bit about page layout and design. I have years of experience in page layout and design.
I created the report design currently in use by the Texas State Auditor's Office. I used to manage the publications department there. I taught multiple document designers to apply the standards established in the Style Guide I created for that agency. I reviewed every document for errors and inconsistencies before it was released. I worked with print shops to get agency documents printed and bound. I've performed desktop publishing in Word and Pagemaker, creating and placing charts, tables, paragraph styles, headers, and footers. Believe it or not, Word CAN be used as a desktop publishing application!
This is the perfect subject for those needing a jump start in using Windows based computers. I've been working with Windows computers for 20 years, and I provided Help Desk support for 7 of those. I can cover anything with you from how to use the Internet, to learning more about Windows and what it can do for you. If you've never used a computer before but want to learn how, this is the place to start. Perhaps you don't even know what to buy? I can provide suggestions on what to look for in a computer that will meet your needs. Need to learn more about how to make the most of your camera or scanner? This is the perfect subject for you. Tell me what you want to learn and we'll tailor our sessions to meet your needs.
Excel can help you keep track of the simplest data, but you can also use it to perform some pretty complex tasks and data analysis. Want to track customer contacts, sales, and commissions? Excel can do it. Need to keep up with your fantasy football team? Use Excel. What you can do with Excel is limited only by what you know about Excel. It doesn't matter whether you've never used Excel before, or you already know how to use it but want to learn more advanced features, we can create a lesson plan that will suit your needs.
While working for a state agency I created Excel templates, workbooks, and spreadsheets for tracking and projecting delivery of computer equipment (conditional formatting, pivot tables); tracking employee training, such as annual minimums required and training received (IF statements, AND statements), and travel request and reimbursements (complex multi-tab workbook with data validation, auto-populated fields with links between spreadsheets, nested IF statements, conditional formatting, control objects). I've also used Excel to analyze data using sort, filter, v- and h- lookup, and pivot tool features.
With over eight years of experience in the Information Technology department of state and city governments, my IT knowledge is broad. I have developed and taught beginner to advanced level training classes in the use of email, specifically Novell GroupWise and Microsoft Outlook. Often my tutoring sessions cross over between Microsoft applications when I'm teaching students quick and efficient ways to do things.
PowerPoint.... Perfect for professional and personal use and fun to use.
I've created some pretty compelling presentations for business use with charts, tables, animation, and professional backgrounds. I've also created some really fun ones for family and friend birthdays, reunions, and such. Add pictures, movies, sound effects, and music.
Create a presentation that allows you to decide when the slides change, or create one that plays automatically. Trying to create a presentation for your parents' anniversary? I can show you how.
Need to reenter the workforce and learn some PowerPoint basics? We can do that too. Just let me know what you need to learn and we'll create a lesson plan that's right for you.
I've worked in a technical environment for five years, three and a half of which were providing Help Desk support for employees at a state agency using Windows XP and Windows 7. I have attended Microsoft 6292A Installing and Configuring Windows 7 Client for IT Professionals. For many of my current students I provide ways to configure Windows settings that they don't understand or that make their work more efficient.
There are other word processing programs in the world, but Microsoft Word is the one most widely used. It's easy to use, but allows users to create documents from a simple list to complex reports and publications. After working with Word for nearly 15 years I can say that I love it and and enjoy working in it.
I can teach you to do anything you need. It doesn't matter whether you've never used Word before, or you just need to broaden your skills. I can show you how to use tables, charts, clipart, headers and footers, and lots of other advanced features.
Need to learn about custom paragraph styles and templates? If you already know what you need to learn, we can build a lesson plan to get you on track. If you don't know where to start, we'll assess your basic computer and word processing knowledge and build a plan from there. Either way, we'll get you where you want to be.
My work in Word began nearly 15 years ago while managing the publications department of a state agency. I've created documents and templates containing custom colors and styles for paragraphs, characters, and tables; macros; charts; alternating headers and footers; tables of contents; bookmarks and cross-references; indices and appendices; and just about every advanced feature available in Word. If you need to know how to do something, I can show you how.
My experience in proofreading and editing began in 1995 when I worked as a document designer/proofreader/editor for a state agency. I eventually went on to manage the publications department for that agency, where I oversaw the work of other document designers, proofreaders, and editors.

Wonderful Asset — Gail is very good at bringing the work down to my level and doesn't move further until she is sure I have grasped the concept. There is no wasted time in the session; Gail is up to date on the material we're covering. She is very good about showing me ways to use Excel that will enhance what I'm covering in the book. 12/04/2012 Thanks to Gail's help I've come from a C average in Excel to an ...
