Hello, I am a recent magna cum laude graduate of the University of North Texas. I earned a BA majoring in English and I have a Teaching Certificate in Language Arts grades 8-12 and Generalist grades EC-6. Currently, I teach ESL classes for DISD and tutor students.
My student teaching experience includes teaching English II Pre-AP and English II at our local high school. Furthermore, I raised ten children (yes, I said 10!), home schooled, and have eleven years experience teaching Sunday school, EC through second grade. As you can see, I like children and three years ago realized by dream of returning to school to pursue a teaching degree. I have a passion for teaching and I want to be a part of a successful learning experience.
My tutoring experience is with all age groups from first grade through college graduate level. I enjoy helping students who are just beginning their school journey as well as those who are trying to finish that journey. I also love teaching English to many ESL students.
I look forward to the opportunity to meet you to discuss whether my skill set would be a good match for your learning requirements. I am certain that I can provide a positive and interesting learning experience designed to meet and exceed your expectations.
I am a Texas Certified Teacher (Generalist for grades 1-6). I have experience and a good success rate in tutoring students in multiple grade levels in all subjects. Additionally, I have a Texas Certification for English Language Arts and Reading for grades 4-12 and am currently employed as a substitute teacher for all grade levels (1-12). I also have multiple years of experience home schooling and teaching Sunday School in the elementary grade levels.
I believe it is crucial for students to become comfortable with the "basics" in the early grades. Once they are comfortable with the concepts, their learning ability increases along with their confidence. My Lesson Plans are varied to promote student interest, but are also structured to cover grade level material.
I am a recent magna cum laude graduate of UNT. I earned a BA majoring in English and a Teaching Certificate in Language Arts grades 8-12. Currently, I volunteer teach an ESL class, substitute teach at my local ISD (all subjects and grade levels), and tutor students. I also participated in the Destination Imagination program as a judge for Carrollton/Farmers Branch ISD. My student teaching experience includes teaching English II Pre-AP and English II at Little Elm High School. Additionally, I raised ten children and home schooled two of them (all subjects) for several years and I have eleven years of experience teaching Sunday school grades EC through second grade.
My qualifications and skills to tutor students in study skills derive from my student experience earning an undergraduate degree and teaching certification along with my teaching and tutoring experiences. For my teaching certification, I took several courses related to best practices in study skill methodologies for students as part of the teaching curriculum. My practical experience (as a trainer for a worldwide corporation and now as a teacher and tutor) consists of assessing students’ study skills, asking students to assess their own skills, and implementing a program to address any study skills gaps. I also work with the student to understand and demonstrate the importance of self-assessment and self-regulation to address the “why” of developing good study skills for successful studying.
For self-assessment, I model different ways for students to reflect on the effectiveness of their study skills by developing and using rubrics to measure and evaluate, sharing work with parents or teachers and obtaining feedback for student evaluation, and to assess whether time requirements were met or not (what were the obstacles and how to correct them next time).
I model effective ways of personal self-regulation by modeling different ways to organize information using outlining, summarizing, maps, drawing diagrams and pictures, along with planning by pacing and time management strategies. I also demonstrate ways of note-taking, organization of papers in color coded folders, mnemonic devices, making up sample questions, and repetition. For behavioral self-regulation, I model strategies to develop tasks analysis (does a student know what the teacher wants, or what is the student supposed to learn?), how to stay on task, or how to work towards a goal.
Along with self-assessment and self-regulation to develop effective study skills, I believe independent study skills should be taught in conjunction with, and integrated into, each subject studied. Integration of good study skills into the subject being studied is measurable proof of students’ growth and will be reflected in the students’ academic output.
