I have been involved in the collegiate, academic system for six years, and have become familiar with an array of disciplines. My undergraduate major was in Interdisciplinary Studies, with concentrations in English, French, History and Anthropology. I am now pursuing a Masters in Philosophy. As a result, I have dealt with a wide variety of subjects, styles and expectations. I have written countless papers for countless professors, and I have learned a good deal along the way. Some things can be taught in style guides. Other things cannot. Sometimes the only thing that works is to have someone with you who has undergone the same travails, who can help you avoid common mistakes, and who can make what appears to be arbitrary and abstruse a little more intelligible.
I have taught to a range of levels, from elementary to collegiate. I am comfortable with all aspects of the research process, and have extensive experience in editing papers. I have also worked with people from different primary language backgrounds, including Arabic and Chinese, so an ESL student will not be a problem. To be sure, I am committed to making the mechanics of English accessible and manageable, regardless of one's prior education. Neither language, nor ideas should belong to a privileged class of individuals.
Most importantly, I am a flexible teacher. Teaching is an exchange between individuals. It is my responsibility to do what I can to meet your needs in a way that best fits your unique situation. My ethic is to be clear, thorough and open to correction. The pedagogical situation is dynamic, and it requires consistent attention on both sides in order to be the most fruitful.
Some of the services that I offer include:
Writing mechanics, style, content (both academic and creative)
Reading comprehension and reading critically
Critical reasoning, logic, argument
Understanding and background in:
Anthropology and Sociology
English literature (conversant in literary criticism, post-structuralism)
French language and literature
Philosophy (Ancient, Early Modern, Kantian, Analytic)
If you are unsure whether I can help you with a particular problem or subject, feel free to message me. If I cannot tutor you, I may still have some suggestions of value.
I initially majored in cultural anthropology at the College of William and Mary, which I attended for a year before returning to Arlington. I spent another year in anthropology at UTA before switching my major to Interdisciplinary Studies. Anthropology remained a concentration, however. Though it is has been some time since I have covered anything contemporary in the field, I am comfortable with the terminology and various methods that have found favor, at one time or another, in the discipline. If I were to encounter a novel theorist, ethnography or concept, I am confident in my ability to assimilate it accordingly.
