I have a passion for learning and for teaching. I have completed 25 years of home educating my 6 children. It was a joy to come alongside my children and teach them throughout their school years, giving them a solid foundation for success in college and various vocations. I have tutored other students in grades 4-12 over the last several years. I have helped some of these children overcome academic challenges which caused them to be under grade level by 2-4 years, but they are now on or near grade level in most subjects.
My teaching experience is broad. In addition to academic subjects, I have taught private piano lessons and instructed American Red Cross CPR and childbirth classes.
I find great fulfillment in teaching, especially one-on-one or in small groups where I can assess the learner and help him to master troublesome material or difficult skills. I work to carefully evaluate why a student is having difficulty and then implement a plan drawing on a variety of methods and resources to assist the student to overcome the problem.
I take the responsibilities of a tutor seriously and respect the investment of time and money which is made by students and their parents. I am dependable and professional in my appearance and conduct, yet I teach with an attitude of encouragement and appreciation for a student's efforts.
In my 25 years of home education experience, I was the only instructor for all 6 of my children in grades K-8. I also have 3 years experience tutoring 4 other elementary-aged children in all subject areas.
I have experience teaching reading, including phonics and reading comprehension, to elementary age children. I can teach phonograms, word decoding skills, and word attack skills. I integrate vocabulary and reading with phonics and reading skills. I also teach students to build a strong vocabulary by learning age-appropriate word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms.
Reading comprehension and critical reading skills are enhanced by asking the student to narrate a passage which has just been read, to answer questions about a passage, and to predict what might happen next in a text.
I provide age-appropriate instruction in standard written English. I have experience with grammar and composition from various publishers including A Beka and the Institute for Excellence in Writing.
I have extensive experience teaching elementary math including all math operations, working with fractions and decimals, and applying math concepts to time and various measurements, including basic geometry skills. I have used math curricula from various publishers including A Beka and Saxon. I have worked with various math manipulatives including unit blocks.
Since my teaching experience included all subject areas, I have also taught social studies and elementary science and health.
Over the last 15 years, I have tutored numerous students in preparation for high school end-of-course final exams as well as for GED, Accuplacer, PSAT, and SAT exams. In helping students master the academic content for these exams, I have taught them how to take meaningful notes from study materials and how to self-test as well as how to learn and review key concepts. I have also taught test-taking strategies related to particular exams. For example, strategies for computer adaptive tests such as the Accuplacer differ from those for traditional paper and pencil exams such as high school finals and the SAT.
Most of my students have performed well on the exams for which I tutored them. Many have earned significant college scholarships based on their SAT scores.
