College Honors Student, ElementaryEducation Major with Art Degree

Hello! My name is Andrea. I am currently attending UTA on a full scholarship for academic merit, working toward my BS in Elementary Education. I graduated with honors from San Antonio College, with an associate's degree in Early Childhood Education, as well as being the distinguished graduate in 2011 with an associate's degree in Art.

I am looking for weekend tutoring jobs, primarily of elementary school-aged children who need help in any subject. The scholarship doesn't cover summer, and I need to take one class in the summer in order to finish my degree in time to graduate before the scholarship money runs out! I'm motivated to earn money, and helping children is what I want to be my life's work, so tutoring seems like the perfect fit.

I will work with your student to find the best way for them to learn whatever they need. I understand that everyone has different learning styles, and finding your student's unique way of learning will be the first thing on my list.

My hobbies include art, crafts, singing, reading, creative writing, watching science fiction shows, bowling, and playing with my two poodles (they're in San Antonio staying with my mom while I finish my degree). I also enjoy martial arts and healthy living.

Vocabulary

It's all about the thesaurus. I'm never afraid to use reference guides to help expand my vocabulary, and I feel that an expansive vocabulary is the key to utilizing the English language to its utmost potential. English can be eloquent, beautiful, and a joy to use, and I hope to help your student find that joy.

Grammar

I read a lot! Grammar is very important to me, because as the saying goes, one comma can be all that stands in the way of tragedy.

Let's eat, Grandma! vs. Let's eat Grandma.

The rules of grammar do make sense, once someone takes the time to explain them, and I'm very patient when it comes to this subject.

Reading

Reading is my favorite hobby! I became hooked in the fourth grade and I've never looked back. One of my goals as a future teacher is to bring that same love of reading to my students, and I hope you'll let me bring it to your student!

Spelling

English is one of the trickiest languages in the world, and it seems like every spelling rule has at least a dozen exceptions. I understand that these rules and exceptions can sometimes stump young minds, but I have every confidence that with patience and innovative techniques, including root recognition, songs, and kinesiology methods, I can help your student improve their spelling.

Elementary Math

I used to be afraid of math, so I can identify with the fears that hold many children back. However, through the efforts of a few extraordinary teachers, I have overcome that fear, and now I view math as a fun, beautiful puzzle. There are so many different ways to approach each and every problem - I know I can help your student understand math, and not just memorize formulas without comprehension of what it is they're doing, exactly.

Elementary Science

I love science! One of my favorite shows is Mythbusters. I feel that science can be fun, and that it answers so many questions that children have as to how the world around them works. I strive to make science relevant to my students' daily lives, to give them the motivation to want to learn this subject.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently enrolled at UTA to earn my BS in Elementary Education. I have a 4.0 GPA in my major, and a 3.964 GPA overall.

Phonics

Last semester at UTSA I took a Language and Literacy Acquisition class, where I earned an A. Phonics were covered.

Study Skills

I have excellent study skills, myself. I work hard for my grades, and that is reflected in my 4.0 GPA. I can pass these skills along to students who need them.

Drawing

I have an associate's degree in Art from San Antonio College, where I graduated as the 2011 Distinguished Graduate in Art. I attended the Pinellas County Center for the Arts, a magnet high school, where I majored in Art. I attended 16th Street Middle School's magnet program for art education.
