My educational background is in the rigorous Oxford-style Liberal Arts and Classical Disciplines of Theology, Philosophy, and Literature. While my specialties are these subjects in particular, such a well-rounded education in the fundamental thought of Western Civilization makes it possible for me to assist in many different subjects ranging from elementary, junior high, and high school-level Math courses to graduate-level Literary Criticism, and everything in between.

I took AP courses through High School, including: English, US History, European History, Government, Economics, and Algebra and graduated with honors. I have experience teaching and tutoring Latin, SAT Test Prep., and high school- and college-level Philosophy, Logic, Religion & Theology, and Literature & Literary Theory. In addition to helping with the student's assignments, my balanced and extensive education and experience allows me to provide him/her with a more comprehensive educational experience, examining not only one subject in particular, but also the relationships between ideas and information and their larger consequences.

There is no such thing as a good education which does not have at its foundations a basic understanding of history and the general developments of thought and culture that create it. I myself took AP US History in High School and scored well on the AP US History test. In addition I have succeeded in college-level courses in US, European, Greek, and Roman History.

Literature

I attended the College of Saint Thomas More, which is an institution in the Great Books and Oxford-style Classical Liberal Arts traditions. As a result, we were required to take a full eight semesters of Literature courses, all of which revolved solely around the reading and study of the great literary works of Western Civilization. Phonics

In addition to a formal course in Linguistics, I have taught and tutored both Latin and beginner's Greek for many years. I have also taken courses in Spanish, French, and German, and though I never progressed far enough in these languages to become fluent, this wide-ranging familiarity with foreign languages and Linguistics has provided me an extensive education in phonology and a unique ability to teach and tutor reading and vocabulary.

Study Skills

Having taught and tutored for many years, I am well-versed in a number of strategies one may espouse in an effort to read, study, and learn well. Especially I am a proponent of the method introduced by Sertillanges in his work "The Intellectual Life" in connection with Mortimer Adler's "How to Read a Book."

Religion

Aside from the many, many years of informal education provided by my religious background, the College of Saint Thomas More which I attended is an institution in the Great Books and Classical Liberal Arts traditions. Bible Studies

Aside from the many, many years of informal education provided by my religious background, I have taken eight semesters of Theology courses, including Scripture Studies. That knowledge allowed me to teach a course in Religion the unique, Scripture-based curriculum for which I designed myself.

Logic

The Medievals referred to Logic as a "Propaedeutic;" i.e., a subject the mastery of which was necessary not simply for a well-rounded education, but for the ability to think and reason correctly in the first place. A proponent of the traditional Western system outlined comprehensively in Peter Kreeft's "Socratic Logic," I am qualified to provide tutoring and assistance in Formal Logic and its connection to Mathematics, Reading, SAT Prep., and Philosophy.

Classics

Having had four years of Latin and one of Greek, taught and tutored Latin many years, designed a hand-tailored Latin curriculum from the ground up, and studied the great works of Classical Literature in connection with both my background in Literary Criticism and the Classical Languages, I am uniquely positioned to provide comprehensive assistance in the student's education in the Classics.
