I’ve tutored over 100 hours of ACT and SAT prep, including over 30 hours of ACT English and ACT/SAT Writing. I also edit content for a website, so I correct grammar errors and check writing for organization and flow on a daily basis.
In my tutoring sessions, I have each student review and practice grammar, punctuation, organization, style, and other concepts covered on the ACT English section. If a student is taking the ACT Writing section, I include ACT essay practice as well.
I’ve tutored over 100 hours of ACT and SAT prep, including over 30 hours of ACT and SAT Math.
ACT Math problems test reasoning skills as well as math knowledge. It can be difficult for students to finish this section in time, particularly if they’ve forgotten some math fundamentals. My ACT Math sessions cover test-taking strategies, test practice, and review of Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry and basic trigonometry topics as needed.
I’ve tutored over 100 hours of ACT and SAT prep, including over 30 hours of ACT and SAT Reading.
ACT Reading questions range from finding specific facts to making inferences from the text. While it’s important to read these passages and questions carefully, slower readers may have trouble finishing in time. On the other hand, fast readers may misread questions or paragraphs to arrive at the wrong answers. My tutoring sessions include frequent practice to help students improve their ACT Reading skills under time pressure.
I’ve tutored over 100 hours of ACT and SAT prep, including over 8 hours of ACT Science. Though this section focuses on scientific reasoning rather than science knowledge, the sheer volume of data on this test can overwhelm a student under time pressure. I help students identify how to approach each type of passage so they don’t get stuck in “analysis paralysis”.
I love algebra and have tutored over 45 hours of Algebra 1. I’ve personally used algebra to solve problems in environmental engineering, financial modeling and online retail, so I can testify that this is an important topic for students to master!
I love algebra and have tutored over 30 hours of Algebra 2. Algebra 2 is a key foundation for college-level mathematics and science courses, particularly for students interested in science or engineering majors. I used Algebra 2 concepts in many of my own undergraduate and graduate engineering courses.
I’ve tutored Geometry at the middle school honors level and at the high school Pre-AP level. Geometry requires learning a large set of theorems, postulates, corollaries, symbols and formulae. Students must understand which of these concepts to apply to any given problem. I help students think through their problem-solving approach so they can choose the right concepts to support each proof or work out each solution.
After tutoring over 30 hours of Prealgebra, I’ve found that quite a few high school students lack key Prealgebra skills. This knowledge gap can cause problems when trying to learn algebra and geometry. I tutor pure Prealgebra sessions but also work Prealgebra topics into tutoring sessions for ACT prep, SAT prep, Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry when needed.
I’ve tutored over 100 hours of SAT and ACT prep, including over 30 hours of SAT and ACT Math.
SAT Math problems focus on testing analytical skills as well as math knowledge. For this reason, it’s important to know how to quickly reason out a plan for solving an SAT Math problem. I help students identify strategies and work through problems to develop this skill. Having a solid grasp on math fundamentals is also critical, so I review Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry topics during my SAT Math tutoring sessions as needed.
I’ve tutored over 100 hours of SAT and ACT prep, including over 30 hours of SAT and ACT Reading.
The SAT Critical Reading section requires strong vocabulary skills, particularly for the sentence completion portion. I include vocabulary lessons and sentence completion practice in my tutoring sessions to help students gain confidence in answering vocabulary-related questions.
Reading comprehension skills are also critical to doing well on this section. Difficult questions typically ask students about the author’s purpose or the literary device used. While it’s important to read these passages and questions carefully, slower readers may have trouble finishing in time. Fast readers, however, may misread paragraphs or questions to arrive at the wrong answers. My SAT Critical Reading sessions include practice to help students improve these skills under time pressure.
I’ve tutored over 100 hours of SAT and ACT prep, including over 30 hours of SAT/ACT Writing and ACT English. I also edit content for a website, so I correct grammar errors and check writing for organization and flow on a daily basis.
Many people – adults as well as high school students – are confused by the difference between everyday casual English and proper grammar. For example, “I have better grades than she” probably isn’t what you’d say to a friend, but this might be a correct answer choice for an SAT Writing question! I help students with these tricky English concepts in addition to reviewing basic rules of grammar and sentence/paragraph organization. I also include SAT Essay practice as part of the sessions.
