I'm passionate about making learning engaging, easy to understand, and intrinsically motivating for students of all backgrounds. With a double major in engineering and philosophy and two minors in mathematics and secondary education, I love learning, mentoring, and being around students. Having spent half of my life in China and the other half in America, I'm bilingual in English and Mandarin Chinese with native proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in both languages. As a result, I'm especially passionate about mentoring and tutoring English Language Learners.

My previous teaching/mentoring experiences include tutoring ACT English and SAT math to English Language Learners, editing and critiquing college entrance essays, and tutoring algebra I to honors students in a local high school. I genuinely love being able to help students realize their potentials and develop the skills and confidence to pursue future successes inside and outside of school.

I specialize in tutoring for mathematics, English for English Language Learners, and Mandarin Chinese for success in school and on the SAT, SAT II, and ACT exams. As a tutor, I am patient, flexible, and compassionate. My goal is to help all students feel they can and want to strive to be the best of themselves--no matter what their previous experiences with math, English, and language learning have been.

As I'm dedicated to providing you with the best possible learning experience, I prepare extensively for all my tutoring sessions, regularly seek feedback from my students on how I can better help them learn, and never charge for a session that my student is not completely satisfied with. I'm flexible with time and in the sense that I'm open to supporting multiple learning styles. I offer a 24-hour cancellation policy and makeup sessions. And to ensure you have a comfortable learning environment, I'm happy to travel to locations that're convenient for you.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success!

ACT Math

I have experience tutoring ACT math to local English language learners. Furthermore, I recently finished a minor in mathematics and secondary education. Beyond teaching concepts frequently tested on the ACT math section, I also believe in teaching study/motivation skills to students as self-monitoring and practicing are key to success on standardized tests.

Algebra 1

In addition to having a minor in mathematics and secondary education, I also have experience tutoring algebra 1 to honors students in a local high school. When it comes to teaching mathematics, I use a combination of direct instruction (lecturing, teacher-centered approach) and discovery/inquiry tasks (student-centered activities in which students discover the concepts under teacher guidance) to challenge--yet not overwhelm--my students. My goal is to tailor my instruction to the student's learning style and interests so that learning is natural and intrinsically motivating for the student.

Algebra 2

When it comes to teaching mathematics, I use a combination of direct instruction (lecturing, teacher-centered approach) and discovery/inquiry tasks (student-centered activities in which students discover the concepts under teacher guidance) to challenge--yet not overwhelm--my students. My goal is to tailor my instruction to the student's learning style and interests so that learning is natural and intrinsically motivating for the student. In addition, I have a minor in mathematics and secondary education.

Chinese

Mandarin Chinese is my native language and I'm proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in standard/Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua). I have a score of 800/800 on the SAT II Chinese subject test and my proficiency in standard Chinese was determined to have surpassed all the undergraduate and graduate Chinese courses taught at Tulane University by the department chair. Having gone through middle school, high school, and university in America, I'm proficient in English and I'm very familiar with the language learning experience and the differences in Mandarin Chinese and English. In addition, my minor in secondary education and experience in tutoring English to English Language Learners will further help me teach Chinese and the necessary language learning skills to students of all backgrounds.

College Counseling

I have experience editing and critiquing undergraduate and graduate admission essays for local and international students. For international Chinese students, I have experience translating admission essays from Mandarin Chinese to English and doing re-writing works with the students. For aspiring graduate students, I have experience helping students apply to statistics PhD programs, teacher education Master's programs, and accounting Master's programs. With philosophy as one of my majors in college, I have training in persuasive writing and critical reasoning that would further assist me in helping students put together outstanding admission essays. I genuinely enjoy helping students formulate and organize their ideas that best express their aspirations, potentials, and identities.

ESL/ESOL

I have experience in tutoring ACT/SAT English and Reading to English Language Learners. I'm also bilingual in Mandarin Chinese and English. Furthermore, I was an English Language Learner myself in my elementary and middle school years so I have personal experience with the language learning process.

SAT Math

I recently finished a minor in mathematics and one in secondary education. Beyond teaching concepts frequently tested on the SAT math section, I also believe in teaching study/motivation skills to students as self-monitoring and practicing are key to success on standardized tests. My goal is to tailor my instruction to the student's learning style and interests so that learning is natural and intrinsically motivating for the student.
