ACT English

As a college teacher, I have instructed hundreds of students in techniques for writing expository and persuasive papers, as well as for writing papers that identify and comment on themes from great literature.
My skills in these areas translate well into preparation for writing well in English (grammar, syntax, diction, logic, and style), as on the English section of the ACT.

ACT Reading

As a college teacher, I have instructed hundreds of students in techniques to analyze passages of writing I've assigned. To help them comprehend a passage's meaning, I've taught techniques to identify point of view, evidence, conclusion, as well as structure and sequence of paragraphs, sentences, and clauses.
I also regularly read over sample ACT questions provided through the official website and guidebooks.

English

In college and graduate school, I studied the great works of drama, novels, poetry, essays, and politics in the English language.

As a college teacher, I have assigned many of these great texts, and have instructed hundreds of students in techniques for reading them carefully, for comprehension of the texts' themes and use of English. I've also taught skills in composition, for students to communicate their understanding in clear, precise, and accurate writing.

GRE

As a GRE tutor, I can help especially with verbal and analytical reasoning, though I can also assist with quantitative reasoning.

As a college teacher, I have instructed hundreds of students in identifying and analyzing arguments in great texts of philosophy, politics, and literature, as well as in contemporary essays and opinions. In the course of this instruction, I have tutored students to master English, through precise knowledge of grammar, syntax, sentence structure, diction, and logic.

Italian

I studied Italian for three years in graduate school, which included both written exercises and translations, and spoken practice. Since then I've kept up with the language by having a pen pal in Milan, by translating Machiavelli and by reading Corriere della Sera online.

Latin

I studied Latin intensively for four years (starting in 9th grade) and have kept up with the language through college, graduate school, and in my teaching career by reading classic works, such as Virgil and Ovid, in the original Latin.
For new learners, I recommend the fantastic stories of myth and legend and the great history of Rome. These texts are very accessible and provide a great way to learn the structure of Latin and appreciate its expressive power.

LSAT

I have studied and drilled myself in LSAT preparation, in both printed and online sources. I have also taken several practice tests and analyzed the reasoning behind questions and correct answers. Additionally, I have focused on the elements of argumentation -- grammar, logic, and rhetoric -- in each of the college courses I have taught, from constitutional law to American political thought to seminars on classics of literature.

Reading

As a college teacher, I have instructed hundreds of students in techniques to analyze passages of writing I've assigned. To help them comprehend a passage's meaning, I've taught techniques to identify point of view, evidence, conclusion, as well as structure and sequence of paragraphs, sentences, and clauses.
I also teach the lost (and highly useful) art of diagramming sentences.

Social Studies

I have a Ph.D. in Political Science and have taught various topics in the subject, and in History (World, European, and American), at the college level for 14 years. Additionally, I have taken several courses in Geography (Intro; Regional; Latin America; U.S. and Canada) as part of the teacher certification program in which I enrolled.
If you like, I would be happy to provide a resume, syllabi, sample assignments and assessments, and peer and student recommendations.

SSAT

I currently tutor students in test-taking strategy, question analysis, and writing skill for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT, and can help with the SSAT, a test similar in many ways. I am also a graduate of a selective independent high school, and remember how I prepared for its entrance exam - so I sympathize with young students aspiring to do well on the SSAT!

TOEFL

I have instructed hundreds of students in techniques for writing clear and organized essays, as well as reading critically, to identify and discuss themes in writing samples.

I apply my skills in teaching how to comprehend and to compose English to those taking the TOEFL. In particular, I teach the "lost arts" of identifying the parts of speech and of diagramming sentences, which are tremendously useful to students.

Vocabulary

As a college teacher, I pay close attention to my students' knowledge of words, particularly as I assign rich and complex documents for them to read and analyze. These texts are challenging, often employing words and phrases that are unfamiliar to the students, but still very important. In assigning the documents, I highlight such words and phrases, and require students to list the meaning of each, using both dictionary definition and context.

This approach has been very effective in developing in students a scholarly habit of learning new words. My students have increased their vocabulary and thereby their knowledge and ability to express ideas and opinions.

Writing

As a college teacher, I have instructed hundreds of students in techniques for writing expository and persuasive papers, as well as for writing papers that identify and comment on themes from great literature.

My skills in these areas translate well into preparation for writing well in English (grammar, syntax, diction, logic, and style).

I also teach the lost art of diagramming sentences -- truly the key to unlock the gates of understanding complex English!

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
