Hello all,

My name is Katie and I'm excited to help your child learn!

I have my Bachelor's degree in special education from the University of Dayton. I am highly qualified in both elementary education and special education. I have experience teaching in both general and special education settings grades K-5 and am currently teaching 4th and 5th grade special education.

I believe any child can learn and succeed. Whether they are gifted and need to be challenged or having difficulty and need to find a new way to access the information I find what works best for the individual child and respond to their needs.

I hope to hear from you soon!

I have experience working with students with dyslexia in both the classroom setting as well as tutoring 1:1. Each child is different and I work with them to find a strategy that makes reading easier for them. Many children with dyslexia are more visually oriented and I may teach them how to visually map what they've read. I also work with students in learning how to chunk their reading to make it more manageable.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified in special education k-12. I am designated as highly qualified for both elementary and special education. I have two years teaching experience in elementary education.

Elementary Math

Math is one of the most common areas of struggle for students and many reach the point where they want to give up. I work with students to find the best way for them to understand not only how to do the math but the concepts behind it. I understand kids' frustration and anger when they've had difficulty and I work with them so they can find success.

Elementary Science

Elementary science tends to be a bit of everything and it can be overwhelming for students. Often, higher level vocabulary and difficult texts can make the information hard to access for some students. I work with students to break down new words and concepts into terms they can understand and integrate with knowledge they already have about the world around them.

Is it he and I or him and me? Who or whom? Did I do well or did I do good? Why is it I jumped but not I goed? Grammar is full of questions about word choice and usage that can get confusing and cause a person to shout in frustration "well, what does it matter? You knew what I meant!" This is especially true when students begin their work in writing. I work with students on answering all those questions, including "why does it matter?"

I can tutor for the Praxis I as well as the Praxis II PLT for grades 5-9, special education Praxis, as well as the Praxis elementary education test. I passed all of these exams with high marks. I received the ETS Recognition of Excellence for scoring in the top 15% of all test takers who have ever taken the Elementary Content Knowledge test. Whether it is reviewing educational theorists or brushing up on content knowledge I can help anyone achieve a high score.

Reading is one of the most complex subjects and the basis for success in every other subject. There is the basic skill of decoding (actually figuring out what the word says) and comprehension (the task of figuring out what it all means). What is the main idea? Who's the main character? Why did a character do something? What might happen next? Each student has different strengths and weaknesses and different ways of learning. I work with them to meet their specific needs. I also ensure we read about topics they're interested in so reading becomes something they want to do, not just something they have to do.

When I first stepped foot in Kazakhstan I didn't speak a word of Russian. After 3 months of intense language study, followed by 2 years living on the Russian border, working with people who spoke no English, I became very proficient. I am particularly strong in conversational Russian and am best able to assist students looking to improve their fluency when speaking. I can also assist with basic writing and reading.

Special Needs

I have a bachelors degree in special education as well as certification in the state of Hawaii. I am designated as highly qualified in special education.

Learning to spell can be challenging. There are so many rules with even more exceptions and words that don't fit any rule. Every letter is silent in some words with the exception of j, q, v, and y. Students can improve their spelling by learning some of the well known rules as well as by memorizing the most important words. I work with students not only to be able to spell but to recognize errors after they've written words down. In this way their spelling and their editing improves.

Study Skills

As a trained special educator, study skills are a specialty. Since each student learns in their own way, it follows that each student studies in their own way. I help students find their way. Whether it is flash cards, note taking, song making, or a variety of other ways, I help students learn to help themselves succeed. I can also assist students in developing organization skills that will help them succeed in school.

The greater your vocabulary the more you understand. New vocabulary comes up in every single subject. Whether it is learning the meaning of sum in Math, photosynthesis in Science, revolution in Social Studies, or the myriad or words students study in Language Arts, vocabulary is everywhere. I work with students to recognize patterns in words as well as use context clues to determine meaning. I also help students with study strategies for memorizing new words.
