I currently hold teaching credentials in special education (N-12) and early childhood education (PreK-3) in the state of PA. I have over a decade of experience working with individuals with autism spectrum disorders (Sensory Integration Disorder, Autism, Aspergers, PDD-NOS). I have a Master of Education in Special Education, with an emphasis on behavior disorders and have also worked with individuals with ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and many other mental health concerns as well. I am willing to adapt sessions to the individual's needs, be that longer sessions, frequent (but time-limited) breaks, or a specific learning style. I enjoy working with students to customize sessions by using a schedule and creating a plan to meet the needs addressed.
I have an undergraduate degree, as well as my master's, from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and have worked in a variety of settings with a wide array of students since. I am able to supervise adults who are preparing for the Behavior Analysis Certification Board Exam, as well as help prepare individuals for the PRAXIS tests (I hold 'highly qualified' status due to my own scores), SATs (780/800 Verbal Score), ACTs (32), and other standardized tests. I enjoy algebra and love to explain concepts clearly, in an applied manner. I have worked to develop self-monitoring programs for individual students and have addressed math needs such as basic facts and problem-solving. I enjoy literature and have developed independent units for several clients as part of their own summer programs. As part of my graduate training, I assisted classroom teachers in implementing research-based reading and math methods and also worked at a well-respected, national tutoring center in the area. I have experience with students from toddler classrooms through high school, and have supervised adults as well.
Although each individual's needs are different, and progress may reflect some 'fine tuning' while we work together to develop the best format for sessions, I have helped students (including those with an Autism diagnosis) make up over a year's worth of progress in reading and math in 1 summer of regular sessions. I have also targeted communication, teaching basic sign language for communication, as well as the use of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), to support individual needs. I have no problem using visuals or assistive technology devices to work with an individual on academic content, to truly assess understanding.
I have supported numerous students to success with standardized testing, whether the state assessments for elementary students, or SAT and GRE test prep. As I am willing to modify methods and identify the needs of each student, I can provide a customized method of support for upcoming, stressful, standardized tests. Students often show improvement and report being more relaxed and comfortable when testing following tutoring sessions. These outcomes show in test scores with students improving by an average of 20% on the GRE after just 8-10 hours of tutoring sessions.
Thank you for considering me as a tutor for your standardized test, general education, and special education needs. Group and individual sessions are available, and those out of my immediate range (40 mi) may be possible via internet tutoring sessions, or with additional travel support.
Please contact me with any questions. I am excited to work with you in the future!
I have worked with individuals with ADD and ADHD for over 7 years, including those who are also considered gifted & talented. I generally address areas of focus by structuring tasks, taking time-limited breaks, and using a variety of methods to present information. I have a special education teaching endorsement.
I have experience working with individuals with high functioning autism and Aspergers syndrome for the past 9 years across a variety of home, school, and community settings. I have worked primarily in individual sessions to target reading comprehension and more abstract math skills (such as problem-solving). I have also addressed test prep needs for individuals who may have test anxiety or difficulty with the timed portions of the test, but don't need to take alternative assessments.
I have worked with individuals from the age of 3 through adults with Autism spectrum disorders (Aspergers, HFA, Autism, PDD-NOS, and SID) for the past 10 years across a variety of settings. I am able to address behavioral support, due to my certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, ABA training, and experience. I also hold a teaching license for Special Education (N-12), and have taught in multiple classrooms for individuals with Autism. In the past, targeting math and reading needs has resulted in my clients gaining up to 1.5 school year levels in reading and 1 year in math- over the course of a summer session. Although each individual is different, I'd be happy to address your needs.
I have experience helping students to visually organize college choices based on a variety of personal factors for the past ten years. This helps them to identify those schools they are most interested in and target applications for those placements. It also aids in identifying schools that might be valuable to visit or obtain additional information on. I an alumni interviewer for my Alma-mater, providing me with information on the college interview and admissions process. I have conducted off-site interviews (not on-campus, but closer to home) for the past three years in this role and have been invited to attend college fairs as well. I oversee a local community course for high school and transfer students on the admissions process and provide practice interviews as well.
I am certified as an early childhood education teacher (pre-k through 4th grade), as well as a special education teacher (N-12). I have worked as a tutor for a well-known tutoring franchise in the past and have worked with students ages 6 to 16 in that environment. I have also held in-home tutoring sessions with individuals ages 7 to 13, both with special needs and on general education topics.
I have taken both the Praxis I tests (reading, writing, and math), and multiple Praxis II tests, as I am certified for both Special Education and Early Childhood Education in 2 states. I am listed as "Highly Qualified" due to my results on the Praxis exams, and received ETS Recognition of Excellence awards for scoring in the top 15% of exam takers for several exams.
I currently teach a college-level introductory course in American sign language. I also use sign language regularly, and have for 10 years, with individuals with special needs including those with hearing impairments, as well as those with autism and down syndrome diagnoses.
As a tutor, I have addressed the area of study skills multiple times with individuals from the ages of 8 through 18. Many students have difficulty with organization, which leads to difficulty studying. Some students have challenges with making a study plan, note-taking skills, knowing what to target, or scheduling study time. All of these areas can be addressed, along with general review of content and understanding. With a specific agency, I was certified to teach study skills and supported several students with identifying and addressing their own study skills needs. I currently hold teaching credentials in special education (N-12) and early childhood education (PreK-3) in the state of PA.
Great Tutor! — Kelly was a great resource for me in preparing for my GRE.
