NEWS (October 2013): So far I've had about a dozen of my tutoring students receive their Masters degrees or doctoral degrees with my help. Two that I know of have full-time college teaching positions, and one is a university administrator.
WHAT I DO
I love to teach, and I love to learn, and I've done a lot of each. I love to help people get to where they want to go.
I help people who need assistance with topics in the areas of psychology, math, statistics, and research design. I have worked with people extensively on SPSS, psychological statistics, biostatistics, quantitative methods, research design, masters theses, doctoral dissertations, and preparation for the math sections of the SAT and GRE. Most of my clients have been college undergraduate and graduate students, but I’ve also assisted business people, college faculty, and medical professionals with research projects. The majors of my college clients have included Psychology, Public Policy, Public Health, Criminal Justice, Mental Health Counseling, Education, and Business Administration.
Although I’ve worked on some advanced projects, I enjoy working with people in entry-level classes and people who are returning to school after a long absence. I’m friendly, patient, and happy to meet my clients at whatever level they are currently working.
It’s important that you feel like you get your money’s worth from working with me. Consequently, I’ve got a two-part guarantee:
(1) the first 30 minutes of our first session is free for all clients; and
(2) I will not charge you for a session if you are not satisfied with my performance.
THE BASICS OF MY QUALIFICATIONS
* I have a Ph.D. in Psychology, with an emphasis in statistics and applied research.
* I have many years of teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in psychology, math, statistics, and research design.
* I have over 20 years of experience as a professional in developing tests and assessments for education and the workplace, including 13 years with ETS, the publishers of the GRE and SAT.
* I have extensive, almost daily experience using SPSS, Excel, and other statistical software throughout my graduate school and professional life.
I have a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Georgia State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Psychology from Georgia Tech. While at Georgia Tech, I also completed most of a degree in Electrical Engineering. In graduate school, my main interest was in statistics and research design. I supported myself through graduate school by teaching psychology and statistics, and as a statistics consultant on dissertations and faculty projects.
I have had two careers. My first career was teaching full-time for ten years at DeVry Institute of Technology (now called DeVry University). At DeVry I taught math, psychology, basic electronics, and a few other courses at all levels from remedial to advanced. My second career, after I received my Ph.D., was with two companies that are involved in creating tests to measure people's skills and abilities. The first company, Educational Testing Service (ETS), is widely known for its standardized educational tests, including the SAT and GRE. In one of my positions at ETS, I wrote math questions for the GRE. The other company I worked for, PreVisor, Inc., creates tests that employers can administer to measure the personality and job skills of job candidates. At both companies I wrote tests and also performed statistical analysis to monitor the performance of the tests. Thomas S. is a very patient and accessible tutor. I have had him as a tutor for graduate level statistics, and he has helped me better understand the fundamental concepts of basic statistics. I highly recommend him.
Thank you Dr. Thomas so much for such a great tutoring and for your extra steps for my progress and success. I am very happy to have you as my teacher and a wise adviser.
Tom, as always, provided expert-based assistance. In this instance, he helped in critiquing academic work involving complex statistical procedures and made useful suggestions for further improvements.
Thomas is actually the best tutor in the world. He is excellent! He started out tutoring me in Statistics and now he is tutoring me in quantitative and qualitative Research. He can teach you anything. He is so brilliant that he can tell me when there is a misprint or mistake in the text book. Listen to him, he is always right. I have 2 more years before completing my PhD and he is tutoring me in every area and preparing me for the final stages. Dr. S. started tutoring me in 2010, and this is 2013, and he is tutoring me at a higher level. (Phd level) I do not want any other statistic tutor but Dr. S. He explains everything well, and he makes sure that I understand the material. Thank you Dr. S.! You were born to teach Statistics, and other courses.
Dr. Tom S is awesome! He has been very detailed and attentive to each of my assignments. He makes sure I have a clear thorough understanding of the material. He will even research a topic in question to provide me with additional references. I rate him a 5 star (excellent lessons). I have been so impressed by and connected with him that I am considering asking him to be on my dissertation committee.
Tom was extremely helpful and patient while answering my questions and going over practice problems for a graduate level research methods course. I'm so glad to have found him on WyzAnt. Thanks again, Tom!
A very patient, talented, and professional tutor. I've been ill for a while, but I can count on him to pick-up right where we left off. He is a trusted advisor.
I could not have completed my dissertation if I didn't have Tom as my statistics advisor! Tom is everything you could want in a tutor.
Tom can take a subject like statistics and make it enjoyable to learn and when you are finished you understand what you have been taught.
Tom was fantastic in teaching me how to run certain SPSS tests. He's patient and has a passion for teaching, and he is very knowledgeable about statistics.
Tom was kind, helpful and accessible. I definitely benefited from his GRE Math tutoring and I did really well on the test thanks to his tutoring!! It would be helpful it Tom would get a better sense of the level of difficulty of the problems on the actual test, and have a few more insights about test-taking strategies based upon how the test is scored. For instance, it would help if he could more definitively advise students about whether they need to answer all of the questions, etc.
I can't begin to thank Tom enough for what he has done for me. In fact, I would not have completed my first semester in my program if it wasn't for Tom. Furthermore, I would not be this far in my program without Tom's instruction.
For somebody who struggles with math and statistics, Tom was an answered prayer! In fact, I have taken Tom for three different statistics classes and ended up making two "B's" and an "A", and this is coming from somebody who had no business making those types of grades in those types of classes. It was all due to Tom's patience and excellent teaching ability.
No matter what level of education you are in, if you need a statistics tutor, you need to look no further. Tom is an absolute professional, and not only will he help you make an above average grade, he will truly enable you to understand the material. He is without a doubt worth his weight in gold.
Thank you Tom, for everything!!
I'm a doctoral student in Education, and Dr. Tom really helped me get through my Advanced Statistics course. He was patient and explained things in a way that made sense. He really knows his stuff, and I could not have made it through that class without him!
Thomas was very patient, thorough, and gave explicit direction and instruction. I passed all of my homework assignments and understood more about the curriculum with his help. If it had not been for him, I would have not passed this class. He is extremely knowledgeable, nice, and caring about your schoolwork. He is the best tutor in Atlanta! I wish you all the best!
Thomas is a knowledgeable and gifted communicator and teacher. I needed his help with data prep and multivariate analysis. I highly recommend him and will get his help to prepare for my doctoral comps.
I got the "A" in a PhD level course, with Walden University, in Research Statistics. The course caused me enormous stress until I started working with Thomas. I could not have succeeded without his help. I never hired a tutor before. He made the process so comfortable. I looked forward to learning with him each visit. I started to be less fearful of the course and ended up enjoying myself. You can tell you are in the presence of mathematical greatness when you are in the same room with Thomas. However, he assists you at your level. I am looking to involve expertise in the quantifying of data to finish Chapter Three of the dissertation process.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have three primary qualifications for tutoring students on the Quantitative portion of the GRE:
1) I am a former test development specialist for ETS, the publisher of the GRE, and have written math questions for the GRE and other ETS tests;
2) I have taught college and graduate-level courses in algebra, calculus, and statistics; and
3) I have tutored more than a dozen individuals on the GRE Quantitative section with great results.
Note: I do not offer tutoring on the Verbal and Writing sections of the GRE.
SPSS can be very intimidating, especially if you are trying to learn it at the same time you are learning statistics. It is a big program that can run a huge variety of statistical analyses.
The good news is that, in most classes, you will only need to run a few of these analyses. In my experience tutoring students on SPSS, you can learn the basics of SPSS pretty quickly. Once you have learned these basics, you can begin to appreciate SPSS's ability to solve statistical problems in the blink of an eye.
I have been using SPSS since I was an undergraduate at Georgia Tech, and have used it regularly throughout my professional life. Whether you are taking an intro statistics course or an advanced multivariate statistics course, or are completing a thesis or dissertation, I can help you learn to use SPSS so that it becomes a time-saving tool, not an obstacle to success.
Many people fear statistics, and I can understand why that is. Statistics courses and research courses require us to look at the world from a different viewpoint than the one we're used to. However, I've found that almost everyone is capable of putting on a different pair of glasses and learning how to think like a statistician -- at least enough to get through a stats course or a dissertation! I've used statistics in my professional and academic life for more than 30 years. As a professor and a tutor I have helped hundreds of students understand and apply statistics in many different situations, including research in social science, education, medicine, nursing, public policy, and business. I'm experienced in statistical software including SPSS, R, and Microsoft Excel.
If you're taking a class where you have to work things out "by hand," I can help with that also. Whether you're taking an introductory course or using multivariate statistics in a dissertation, I can help you get through it, and hopefully even enjoy it a bit. It *is* possible!
