NEWS (October 2013): So far I've had about a dozen of my tutoring students receive their Masters degrees or doctoral degrees with my help. Two that I know of have full-time college teaching positions, and one is a university administrator.
WHAT I DO
I love to teach, and I love to learn, and I've done a lot of each. I love to help people get to where they want to go.
I help people who need assistance with topics in the areas of psychology, math, statistics, and research design. I have worked with people extensively on SPSS, psychological statistics, biostatistics, quantitative methods, research design, masters theses, doctoral dissertations, and preparation for the math sections of the SAT and GRE. Most of my clients have been college undergraduate and graduate students, but I’ve also assisted business people, college faculty, and medical professionals with research projects. The majors of my college clients have included Psychology, Public Policy, Public Health, Criminal Justice, Mental Health Counseling, Education, and Business Administration.
Although I’ve worked on some advanced projects, I enjoy working with people in entry-level classes and people who are returning to school after a long absence. I’m friendly, patient, and happy to meet my clients at whatever level they are currently working.
It’s important that you feel like you get your money’s worth from working with me. Consequently, I’ve got a two-part guarantee:
(1) the first 30 minutes of our first session is free for all clients; and
(2) I will not charge you for a session if you are not satisfied with my performance.
THE BASICS OF MY QUALIFICATIONS
* I have a Ph.D. in Psychology, with an emphasis in statistics and applied research.
* I have many years of teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in psychology, math, statistics, and research design.
* I have over 20 years of experience as a professional in developing tests and assessments for education and the workplace, including 13 years with ETS, the publishers of the GRE and SAT.
* I have extensive, almost daily experience using SPSS, Excel, and other statistical software throughout my graduate school and professional life.
I have a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Georgia State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Psychology from Georgia Tech. While at Georgia Tech, I also completed most of a degree in Electrical Engineering. In graduate school, my main interest was in statistics and research design. I supported myself through graduate school by teaching psychology and statistics, and as a statistics consultant on dissertations and faculty projects.
I have had two careers. My first career was teaching full-time for ten years at DeVry Institute of Technology (now called DeVry University). At DeVry I taught math, psychology, basic electronics, and a few other courses at all levels from remedial to advanced. My second career, after I received my Ph.D., was with two companies that are involved in creating tests to measure people's skills and abilities. The first company, Educational Testing Service (ETS), is widely known for its standardized educational tests, including the SAT and GRE. In one of my positions at ETS, I wrote math questions for the GRE. The other company I worked for, PreVisor, Inc., creates tests that employers can administer to measure the personality and job skills of job candidates. At both companies I wrote tests and also performed statistical analysis to monitor the performance of the tests.
I have three primary qualifications for tutoring students on the Quantitative portion of the GRE:
1) I am a former test development specialist for ETS, the publisher of the GRE, and have written math questions for the GRE and other ETS tests;
2) I have taught college and graduate-level courses in algebra, calculus, and statistics; and
3) I have tutored more than a dozen individuals on the GRE Quantitative section with great results.
Note: I do not offer tutoring on the Verbal and Writing sections of the GRE.
SPSS can be very intimidating, especially if you are trying to learn it at the same time you are learning statistics. It is a big program that can run a huge variety of statistical analyses.
The good news is that, in most classes, you will only need to run a few of these analyses. In my experience tutoring students on SPSS, you can learn the basics of SPSS pretty quickly. Once you have learned these basics, you can begin to appreciate SPSS's ability to solve statistical problems in the blink of an eye.
I have been using SPSS since I was an undergraduate at Georgia Tech, and have used it regularly throughout my professional life. Whether you are taking an intro statistics course or an advanced multivariate statistics course, or are completing a thesis or dissertation, I can help you learn to use SPSS so that it becomes a time-saving tool, not an obstacle to success.
Many people fear statistics, and I can understand why that is. Statistics courses and research courses require us to look at the world from a different viewpoint than the one we're used to. However, I've found that almost everyone is capable of putting on a different pair of glasses and learning how to think like a statistician -- at least enough to get through a stats course or a dissertation! I've used statistics in my professional and academic life for more than 30 years. As a professor and a tutor I have helped hundreds of students understand and apply statistics in many different situations, including research in social science, education, medicine, nursing, public policy, and business. I'm experienced in statistical software including SPSS, R, and Microsoft Excel.
If you're taking a class where you have to work things out "by hand," I can help with that also. Whether you're taking an introductory course or using multivariate statistics in a dissertation, I can help you get through it, and hopefully even enjoy it a bit. It *is* possible!
