My name is Katherine. I received my BA in Japanese Language & Literature from the University of Memphis in May 2011. I have been tutoring Japanese language and literature to high school students privately since August 2008. I have been a swim instructor since January 2010, and a certified USA Swim Coach since June 2011. I am a published author.
In the past four years, four of my students went on to pursue Japanese language in accredited universities. Two placed into second and third year courses in Japanese upon completing four years of study with me. In the University of Memphis high school language fair, a foreign language competition, two of my students placed third and fourth among students taking Japanese in the city schools during our first year. The second year they placed fourth in the kanji bee, and took 3rd in the music and drama competition for a script they wrote & performed in Japanese themselves.
I led a Senior Trip to Japan last summer, June 2012. I took five students with me, one of whom had been studying Japanese for a year and a half and could speak on her own when she went. I prize my students on giving their best, and try to instill a passion for learning.
I currently only tutor students 10 years of age or older, in group or private settings. I do not travel to other people's homes, but will meet any student in a neutral place prior to tutoring out of my own home. Parents/siblings are welcome to sit in for safety reasons, and my husband or siblings will sit in with me. I reserve the right to ask any student in group classes to move to a lower level or drop classes as needed.
I have been teaching children ages three and older and adults of all ages how to swim since January 2010. I was a competitive swimmer in high school, and decided to pursue Japanese at the University of Memphis instead of swimming at the University of Auburn for career reasons. However, I am very passionate about swimming.
I began a youth swim team in the summer of 2011, built entirely of children I had personally taught with no knowledge of swimming who ended with me on a competitive level. I became a certified USA Swim Coach in order to allow our team to join the prestigious USA Swimming League. I have also trained swim instructors and assistant swim coaches.
I am currently the Head Swim Coach and Pool School Director at a private sportsplex where I offer group and private swim lessons as well as coach a competitive youth swim team.
English Language/Writing Skills:
While studying for my undergraduate degree at the University of Memphis,I assisted the ESL department by working with exchange students in their study of the English language. I also assisted peers in proof-reading their written assignments (short stores, essays, term papers, and dissertations).
I began my undergrad as an English composition major, and won first place in a historic essay competition for the entire student body at Southwest TN Community College in the first semester of my freshman year. I have since then had one young-adult novel published under my maiden name. I changed my major to Japanese Language prior to graduating.
I currently work full-time for a major pest control company as their Customer On-boarding Specialist, and part of my position includes training my peers in computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Visio), MISSION application, Corrigo, and Salesforce.com.
