Teaching and learning have informed my life.

I earned my Bachelor's degree and teaching credential from London University and the University of the West Indies, respectively. I taught high school for fourteen years in my native Jamaica before earning master's and doctoral degrees from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Massachusetts.During my time at Harvard I was a member, then a chairperson of the board of the Harvard Educational Review.

I have taught at all level - from middle through graduate school - across this nation and in the Caribbean. In each arena I have been blessed with a joy in teaching, and without exception, worked hard with, and had high expectations of all my students. The resulting eagerness to learn and expanded visions on the the part of my students have propelled them into many arenas of success.

After a long career in education that incorporated teaching, administration, entrepreneurship, and consulting, I retired in 2006, but continue to work in lifelong education as an Academic Counselor and Life Coach. I am currently working on two books - a compilation of Bible stories for children, and a series on women in the Bible. I also lead a book club for fourth and fifth grade boys, and seminars for women.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary school is critical to a student's later academic success. I work with students to engage their interest in learning and show them HOW to learn. Each student is encouraged to identify and use his/her own learning style to facilitate learning. I have taught 5th through 7th grade and have run my own successful summer tutoring program for this age group.

English

I have taught students at all levels and have a lot of expertise in using the content and format designed to appeal to the student

I have many years of experience in teaching English to students at all levels. I have learned how to choose the content and design learning experiences which engage each learner. I also know the level of mastery required at each grade level, and am able to show students how to engage in their own learning.

Public Speaking

I won several awards for public speaking in high school, and was a member of my college's debating team. I was a high-school and college teacher for more than 30 years. For the past 20 years, I have been the lead presenter at various conferences, and currently lead study groups for women and children. I have extensive experience in identifying a learner's specific needs, and designing appropriate learning activities to meet those needs.
