I really enjoy linguistics and how they affect our English language. One of the biggest influences on English has been and continues to be French. I love the French language and culture and love to share that passion with students of all ages, from young children to adults. I am also passionate about teaching others to express themselves in writing in our own language and how to build a good vocabulary which will help them in school and in their work.

I taught both French and English in Williamson Co., Tennessee, for over 25 years. I have taught French at the middle school and high school level in Metro Nashville for the last two years. (Hume-Fogg, Hillsboro High, J.T. Moore Middle School.) I am currently displaced from Metro due to the cutting of over 200 teaching positions. I have extensive coursework in ELL (ESL, ESOL) and have done some tutoring in that area, as well as in the area of test preparation for SAT and ACT reading and writing sections.

Grammar

English grammar can be very arbitrary and quirky. Having a strong background in French, which used to be very closely aligned with English in days of old, has really helped me to better understand the origins and current applications of English grammar and to be able to explain it in a simple, easy-to-grasp manner.

French

I have taught levels 1 - 5 AP French for over 30 years.

Writing

I enjoy teaching writing to those who find it scary and overwhelming. I work on all sorts of writing skill, including grammar, structure, thesis, development, organization, etc. Students I've tutored in writing have been successful once they catch on to the system and practice, practice, practice!

English

My Master's degree is in English Education from Vanderbilt University so I enjoy teaching all aspects of the English language: reading comprehension, vocabulary, composition, and grammar. The English language has a lot of irregularities and can be very confusing, so I try to find concrete rules and formulas which a student can use to be classified as proficient.

ACT Reading

We all know that reading comprehension is the key to success in any subject and in any standardized test. ACT Reading is particularly tough, but there are tips and strategies which can certainly increase overall scores through success on the Reading section. Reading is equally important on the English and Science sections of the ACT.

ACT English

Success on the ACT test in general relies primarily on strategies and being very familiar with the types of questions asked consistently. Time is the enemy on the ACT, and I offer ways to shave off precious seconds and minutes.

For the English test in particular, I show the students the picky grammar questions which will definitely be asked at least once and help them recognize them readily and be secure in the knowledge that the students can answer those confidently.

ESL/ESOL

I have four courses in ESOL through Tennessee State University and passed the Praxis exam, which enables me to be certified through Metro Nashville Public Schools. I have had experience in teaching an adult ESOL class (intermediate level) through the Williamson County Adult Education program.
