Arabic

I studied Arabic overseas in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon over the course of about 2 years. I received the prestigious Buckman Scholarship to study in Egypt at the American University in Cairo in the spring semester of 2010. I also studied in Amman, Jordan the summer of that year at Qasid Institute. I received particular recognition by the Qasid program, having been interviewed and featured on their home page.

Lastly, I studied at Global University in Beirut, Lebanon from summer of 2012 to the summer of 2013.

In addition to my abroad experience in the language, I studied Arabic for 2 years in the states during my undergraduate career at Rhodes College. I will also begin my master's in Arabic Studies starting in the fall of 2014.

The courses I took over the course of my 4 years of intensive study cover a wide variety of topics related to the Arabic language. I studied grammar, morphology, Arabic literature, Arabic poetry, Arabic rhetoric, elocution, media studies, and more. I also memorized and took a detailed explanation of a text in classical Arabic called Al-Ajurumiyyah, a work that is studied at the master's and PhD level in Arab Studies programs. The fact that I have mastered this text prior to even entering a postgraduate program in Arabic very clearly evidences my skill in the field.

Furthermore, in 2011, I began teaching Arabic on Saturdays at a local middle school in Virginia and at a mosque in Maryland on Sundays every week between September of 2011 until June of 2012 with kids ranging in age from 7 to 17. I am currently teaching Intermediate Arabic at a local community center in Memphis, TN on Saturdays as well.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
