Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught English as a Second Language in elementary (K-6) for 18.5 years, and as part of that job, I taught various grade level core subjects, such as math, social studies, reading (phonics, comprehension, etc.), and language (grammar and usage, vocabulary, etc.) and literature.

English

I taught English as a Second Language for a total of 29 years at various levels from elementary to adult. I can design an individual program of study that meets your needs in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Phonics

I taught phonics to elementary ESL students for 19 years in St. Paul, Minnesota. I have a Masters Degree in Second Languages and Cultures Education from the University of Minnesota.

Reading

I can help students with phonics at all levels from basic to more advanced. I can also help students build vocabulary and improve their skill at figuring out the meaning of unfamiliar words in context. I can also help them with reading comprehension strategies in general (main idea, details, inferences, conclusions, author's purpose and point of view, etc.)

Social Studies

I team taught 3rd grade social studies. I tutored ESL students in grades 3-6 in social studies. I have assisted adults in preparation for the U.S. Citizenship test.

Study Skills

I helped elementary ESL students with study skills, particularly with respect to test taking, in the St. Paul Public Schools.
