ADD/ADHD

I have 2 years experience teaching students with ADD/ADHD. My background in Counseling offers me a better understanding than most as to how to motivate and hold the attention of students suffering from ADD/ADHD. I believe every child can be successful; all it takes is a teacher willing to even the playing field.

Career Development

During my coursework for my Master's degree in Counseling, I took Career Counseling courses. I believe that finding the right career is more than a compilation of answers on an interest survey. I think that understanding the world of work, the process of networking, and career development are essential to any career planning.

Criminal Justice

My Bachelor's degree is in Sociology with a concentration in Criminal Justice. I have coursework in Corrections, Juvenile Delinquency, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Deviance, and numerous other areas related to Criminal Justice. I have a true love for Sociology, and I firmly believe that Criminal Justice cannot be completely understood when out of context with Sociology.

Elementary (K-6th)

I passed the Praxis test for teaching elementary education in 2008. I worked for 2 years as an elementary school teacher for students grades 2-5. I believe that elementary school should be a time of exploration, learning, and fun. Success in elementary school builds the confidence and self-assurance every child needs to succeed throughout their education career.

Elementary Math

Elementary math spans from learning numbers to beginning algebraic equations. Math is best learned experientially, hands-on, and full of daily life applications. These three elements are essential to learning to love numbers and the vast worlds that numbers open up for you.

Elementary Science

Elementary science holds a fascinating world of exploration for young learners. From how change happens to understanding the layers of the earth, science always provides an amazing adventure.

English

The basis of all learning is founded in the correct usage and expression of the English language. There is no subject more vital to one's success in life than English.

General Computer

In an ever-changing, technology-based society, understanding general computer skills is a necessity now at any age. From pre-school to retirement, computers are a life-line to the world outside. Understanding the basics of operating a computer opens up an arena of unlimited information and communication.

Grammar

Grammar is often a scary subject for many students and parents alike. From conjugating verbs to correct punctuation, grammar can be very intimidating. Luckily, it doesn't have to be. A firm foundation in grammar will provide success in all areas of learning.

Literature

Literature is an enormous, amazing subject. Stories, poetry, plays, biographies, and memoirs are a fascinating journey into worlds beyond our imagination. Why not take the time to explore?

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is becoming one of the most widely used business programs worldwide. It is a versatile spreadsheet program that allows you not only to organize data but to interact with the data through numerous mathematical functions. Excel is a necessity for anyone entering the world of work.

Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is a user-friendly interface for online communication that is widely used in school and professional environments. I have 4 years of experience working with Microsoft Outlook professionally. I also updated my skills through a class on Microsoft Office 2010/ Internet Explorer 8 in Fall 2010.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft Powerpoint is a standard in presentation programming. It is a versatile way to share information and keep an audience's attention and interest. Powerpoint is useful not only to professionals but students, as well. Powerpoint presentations are fast-replacing the traditional posterboard visual aides in every grade level.

Microsoft Windows

I have worked with Microsoft Windows since 1996. I updated my skills in 2010 to fully optimize the use of Windows 7. I am adept at navigating this operating system and fully capable of helping others understand how to use this user-friendly interface.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is an amazing word processing program. There are hundreds of functions in Word that allow students and professionals to create eye-catching, grammatically correct papers. Experience with Microsoft Word is a necessity at nearly any age-level.

Phonics

Phonics are the building blocks of reading. I have 2 years' experience teaching phonics to elementary school children from 2nd to 5th grade. It is a skill that does not lose its usefulness after kindergarten. Phonics are a very student-friendly way to encourage reading and the expansion of one's vocabulary.

Photography

I have 15 years' experience as an avid photographer. I have 2 year's experience using GIMP2 for photo editing and enhancement. I specialize in creating vivid, eye-catching E-Book covers using everyday photographs. With some skill essentials, it is easy to take regular photos from boring to amazing.

Public Speaking

I have 30 years' experience with public speaking. I have spoken on topics ranging from sex education to the importance of cultural sensitivity to audiences ranging from 10 to 500 or more. I spent 5 years as a member of the National Forensics League, a professional association of public speakers. From after dinner speeches to class presentations to intellectual debates; I have the skills to share with anyone experiencing difficulty in this area.

Reading

Reading comprehension is a skill that creates success in every subject area. Understanding the meaning of the words in front of you is vital to understanding information from science to math. Decoding and reading comprehension are a solid foundation for academic success.

Social Studies

I have 2 years' experience teaching elementary school social studies. I have coursework in American history, world history, Roman history, Russian history, government and economics, and social movements. Social studies is an interesting, wide-open area of study with a wondrous array of historical and social change stories for students to learn from and create a better world.

Special Needs

I have 2 years' teaching experience working with Special Needs students. I am adept at creating and implementing IEPs, FBAs, BIPs, Manifestation Determination meetings, and ensuring that IDEA guidelines are followed to ensure every student a Fair and Appropriate Public Education. I have passed both Praxis tests for teaching special needs students, including Emotionally and Learning Disabled students. I am currently the Special Needs Kids Examiner for Greenville.

Spelling

Spelling is a tricky subject, and one that is often being pushed to the wayside thanks to technology and word processing software. Spelling does, however, remain an important and integral part of effective communication. Little tricks like "i before e" and "silent e at the end makes the vowel in front of it say its name" help young spellers become lifelong good spellers.

Study Skills

I graduated from high school, undergraduate college studies, and graduate college studies Summa Cum Laude. I understand the importance of quality study skills and regimens to ensure that one's education is maximized. Without proper study skills, coursework can become increasingly difficult as one's education continues. It is best to have a solid foundation of study skills early on to create academic success later in life.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is closely related to both reading comprehension and grammar. Reading increases one's vocabulary, and increasing one's vocabulary leads to stronger reading comprehension. Although vocabulary is rarely seen as an independent subject, it definitely merits that classification. Expanding vocabulary skills can increase skills in all other areas of language arts.

Writing

Writing has long been a passion of mine. I believe that clear, effective writing is vital for educational and career success. Writing is more than just words on a page. It is an ability to express oneself in multiple forms and multiple voices. It is the legacy that each person leaves behind. Words are a forever gift.
