From the earliest age, communication skills are the key to success. Reading and writing well are life-altering skills, and it is never too late to improve them. Learning to "crack the code" can be challenging and stressful; helping people of all ages strengthen their abilities requires an individual approach, empathy, and insight. As a mom, helping my two children integrate listening, speaking, reading, and writing taught me almost as much as it did them. I'm proud to say that both of them are communication professionals as adults.

The approach I take to helping children succeed is to maximize their strengths as well as their challenges. No child is trying to fail. There's no "right" way for all kids to learn. With patience and an individualized approach, each conquered milestone is a step toward new confidence and competence. I've worked as a classroom volunteer for many years, helping children of all abilities and disabilities learn in a way that breaks what's difficult down into less frustrating and more manageable segments. It's a win-win. Let's get started!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Taking timed tests mindfully and logically can dramatically change test scores. It's an invaluable skill in all stressful situations! I can help your child approach the ACT with less anxiety.

ACT Reading

Reading for context is the key to doing well on the ACT. Being able to quickly analyze the context and content is the goal; reading thoughtfully is the way to succeed. I can help your child read analytically by focusing on key ideas, phrases, and contextual clues to answer questions correctly.

Elementary Math

Math can be terrifying. I know, because I suffered from math anxiety in elementary school. I can help your child grasp the foundations of math and crack the code with patience and practice.

Elementary Science

I've always loved geology and natural science; working with my own children taught me almost as much as it taught them! I am very well read in elementary level biology, geology, meteorology, and oceanography, and understand their underlying principles.

English

As a lifelong reader and writer, I know what it takes to communicate well. I graduated with honors in English and have the patience and experience to help your child learn, and hopefully enjoy, all that language has to offer.

Grammar

Grammar is all about the rules, just like math. Once your child grasps them, the rest is easy. As a lifelong reader and writer, I know how to help your child put the pieces together and learn to write creatively and correctly.

Literature

I am a voracious reader, and graduated with honors in English. I know how to read critically, and am very familiar with writings from ancient to modern. The joy of literature is learning to literally read between the lines.

Needlework

I have been doing needlepoint since I was ten years old. My collection of work is extensive; it includes pillows, belts, keyrings, and brick covers. It's a wonderful and creative art that is easy to adapt to meet anyone's needs.

Proofreading

Because I am an accomplished writer, I know the rules. Learning them takes time, practice, and attention, and it's a skill that lasts a lifetime. Knowing the rules makes it easy to write well--and to recognize what's wrong. As the mother of two writers, I have a lot of practice!

Reading

As an English major and voracious reader, I understand the importance of reading for content, context, and detail. Reading for meaning is what I can help your child succeed in achieving. Reading can be like a treasure hunt, with only one correct path, or a tree, with many interpretations.

SAT Reading

Reading for context as well as content is the key to scoring well on standardized exams such as the SAT. Finding the clues quickly and analyzing are the best ways to choose answers accurately, and I can help your child find them.

SAT Writing

Knowing grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure will enable your child to achieve better standardized test scores, and that is my focus as a tutor. Practice and proofreading will be key factors to success on the SAT. Working one on one with your child will help with confidence as well as practice.

Spelling

Spelling is part practice, part memorization, and an integral part of reading. Reading well, spelling, and phonics are the trifecta of communicating with the written word. As a lifelong reader and writer with an honors degree in English, I can help your child navigate spelling and all its mysteries with success.

Vocabulary

I have an almost photographic memory when I read; as a result, my vocabulary is extensive. I can help your child learn vocabulary by stressing fundamentals. Breaking words down to their roots and learning their contexts makes learning new and more complicated language less daunting and more fun.

Writing

It can't be stressed enough that writing well is a key to success in most aspects of life. As a lifelong writer and reader, I can help your child write clearly, concisely, and creatively. From a simple journal to an expository essay, the process is the same.
