As a Cognitive Psychologist, I understand the need to individualize the learning process for each and every student. Whether it be Reading, Spelling, Writing, GED Prep, Math, or Tips for Test Taking, learning at your own pace, in your own time and in your own way is not a deficit. Whether support is needed for a child or an adult, I can offer the academic support necessary to achieve success. I understand the need for a multisensory approach and am willing to contact teachers for a consult.

On a more personal note, I was driven to become a Cognitive Psychologist because my own son was not learning to read and write. Today he holds two graduate degrees from one of the most prestigious colleges in the country, both received with highest honors! I developed one of the most successful GED programs in the Lowcountry and my students not only passed, but their scores were above average. I developed a feeder program to improve writing, reading and critical thinking skills for those students headed for Trident Tech. My method is simple: define what the student knows, identify his strengths and weaknesses, outline the required knowledge needed and assist the student in reaching his goals. It's as simple as that! Oh, I almost forgot, I think out of the box, but have high expectations. The sky is "not" the limit!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

My college career was centered on children who learned differently. The proclivities for which ADHD, ADD and dyslexic children are not strange to me, as I have a son who struggled through the educational system due to a learning difference. What I know is that these children/adults respond well to alternative types of learning environments, educational tools, understanding of the child's learning morality and most important...keen observation by the instructor. It is not a one size fits all approach and requires flexibly. I am totally convinced through first hand experience of the ability of this type of learner to succeed, and I will go above and beyond the norm to find those educational keys which open the doors to learning. These are some of the brightest and creative minds around.

Dyslexia

My college career was centered on children who learned differently. I spent over 15 years researching alternative methods of learning not only as a personal goal, but presented them to a school system for the betterment of all children. The proclivities for which ADHD, ADD and dyslexic children are not strange to me, as I have a son who struggled through the educational system due to a learning difference. As a high school sophomore he was unable to read with an IQ of over 140. What I know is that these children/adults respond well to alternative types of learning environments, educational tools, understanding of the child's learning morality and most important...keen observation by the instructor. It is not a one size fits all approach and requires flexibly. I am totally convinced through first hand experience of the ability of this type of learner to succeed and I will go above and beyond the norm to find those educational keys, which open the doors to their learning. These are some of the brightest and creative minds around. Einstein was one of them!

Elementary (K-6th)

As someone who understands there are required educational standards needed for the success of each student throughout K-6, I have the following criteria needed to facilitate learning for these students..
K-6 English, Grammar and Writing

I taught English, Grammar and Writing to hundreds of student for more than three years at Trident Literacy, as well as, wrote programs for individual students to support their skills in these subjects. I also worked individually with students who were unable to pass their college entrance exams due to poor English, Grammar and Writing skills, plus designed and taught GED classes in these subjects. My own personal skills in these areas are up to date as I am a grant writer, reviewer, and have recently become an editor for a national publishing company.

K-6 Math

I taught math for GED prep covering basic math facts and concepts, geometry, word problems and algebra. Each student was assessed by me to identify the areas needing support. I provided the resources and materials for the student to reach their math goals. I took college accounting, statistics and business math receiving highest of honors in all classes. I grew up in a business family and also married into a business family so math is an every day concept that I am well aware of and its importance and application to real world situation is something that I incorporate in my teaching.

Science, History, and Reading Comprehension are also subjects in relationship to the GED that I have taught. I support students learning of this type of information through study skills and comprehension as it pertains to the understanding of the content. My students are taught to engage their minds with the material by asking pertinent questions, such as who, what, where, why, when and then expanding their knowledge upon these basics.

My overall methodology highlights the following:
...Able to identify the necessary skills and concepts in each subject
...Able to motivate and to identify student's strengths and weaknesses
...Able to model study skills, improve comprehension and retention for the student
...Experience in writing IEPs and programs for students for their success
...Promote motivation and high expectations of the student and underscore the need for clarity and understanding of the material for the student' success

On a personal note, I graduated at the top of my class as an under-grad and in the master's program. I have a love of learning that just won't quit. If there is information out there that will help that child, ... I'll find it. My motto has always been, "if the student doesn't get it.... It's my responsibility to see that they do. The brain is a beautiful thing and you just have to work with it. I facilitate learning for adults in the same way. I think my biggest success was helping an 81 year old man who had worked in the cotton fields at a very young age get his GED!

Phonics

Helping children and adults learn to read is more than memorizing a list of words. Phonics is crucial to decoding, spelling and reading. Listening skills, using tactile educational materials, and repetitive work through visual introduction to the sounds connecting written letters is a step by step process. From word blends, flash cards, rhymes, reading aloud, and the much needed support and practice, I can improve a child's decoding skills. Also, I took child speech and educational development in college.

Reading

Learning to decode words is frustrating for children and adults who require one on one assistance to make gains in reading. Their learning difference is often times not recognized and the needed adjustments in how reading is taught gets left behind. As a Cognitive Psychologist who has studies learning for over 20 years and a Mother whose son had not mastered these skills until later in his high school career, I know how to make reading improvements for the struggling reader. And the most important part, I know how to build confidence for those who see themselves as unable to learn to read.

Social Studies

Social Studies requires a student to have good reading comprehension skills in order to understand the Social Studies concepts, which are based on civic responsibility within a democratic society. I can provide a structure for both. I taught reading comprehension and provided remedial support for student struggling with reading. Also I can provide the appropriate study skills and reading techniques required to extrapolate the required information for academic success in Social Studies. Also, I work with nonprofits in numerous countries, which has given me a great appreciation for different cultures and environments. This exposure has given me a greater understanding of our own social place in the world.

Special Needs

My college career was centered on children who learned differently. The proclivities for which ADHD, ADD, special needs and dyslexic children are not strange to me, as I have a son who struggled through the educational system due to a learning difference. Sometimes, these are some of the brightest and creative minds around.

Study Skills

As a Cognitive Psychology my main focus was in how the mind acquires information. This included Educational Psychology which covered techniques to develop skills in helping the student learn. I've demonstrated these techniques to adolescent and adult students with great success.
