Over the past 3 years I have tutored both through WyzAnt and in tutoring centers in northern New Jersey. I tutor mainly in mathematics, and I hold a Bachelor's in Mathematics from Rutgers University. I find that the most detrimental thing to a mathematics student is lacking a core foundation. In math, everything you learn builds on top of what you learned in previous years, and without that strong foundation, students can fall behind. When teachers explain something in class they assume that the students have a certain knowledge about math based on what they learned in previous years. If a student is lacking in a certain area of what they are assumed to know, they won't understand the new topic, and it creates a snowball effect where the student falls more and more behind. As a tutor, I feel it is my job to fill in those gaps so the student can learn effectively. I have experience tutoring in a broad subject range, from Algebra through college level Calculus.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Actuarial Science

I recently passed and an proficient in the material on both Exams P/1 and FM/2.

Praxis

I am able to tutor for the Praxis for Mathematics Content Knowledge. I have passed this test myself, getting only one question incorrect. I recommend getting one of the prep guides, working your way through it, and then when you have questions or concepts you've forgotten, we can review the particular topics you're struggling with.

Sometimes math can come to you at some of the most strange times. This weekend my girlfriend was cooking a pie, and had enough filling for a 13 inch crust, but we only had 9 inch pie plates. It was almost as if a math problem from a text book was coming to life. She asked me if I thought she could make a second pie from the leftover filling for the first pie, and I did some simple calculations... read more
