Rutgers University (Mathematics)
Over the past 3 years I have tutored both through WyzAnt and in tutoring centers in northern New Jersey. I tutor mainly in mathematics, and I hold a Bachelor's in Mathematics from Rutgers University. I find that the most detrimental thing to a mathematics student is lacking a core foundation. In math, everything you learn builds on top of what you learned in previous years, and without that strong foundation, students can fall behind. When teachers explain something in class they assume that the students have a certain knowledge about math based on what they learned in previous years. If a student is lacking in a certain area of what they are assumed to know, they won't understand the new topic, and it creates a snowball effect where the student falls more and more behind. As a tutor, I feel it is my job to fill in those gaps so the student can learn effectively. I have experience tutoring in a broad subject range, from Algebra through college level Calculus. Session minimum is 1 hour, would be willing to negotiate discounts for longer sessions or meeting at a close location, as much of my expense ends up being travel.
Rich is an excellent Math tutor. He manages to cover a lot of material and is very much in-tune to the needs of his student (my daughter). She looks forward to the meetings and has been very well prepared for all her quizzes and tests. He has provided extra practice problems by email and has put extra effort to address her particular weaknesses. We highly recommend him.
Richard helped my son get an A in geometry after only one session. He's always on time, explains the
material patiently and is very knowledgeable with the material.
Rich uses real life situations and concepts students understand to explain math formulas. He knows his subject and how to teach it.
Rich has worked with my kids for most of this academic year and always projected the sense of competence and professionalism as well as encouragement and enthusiasm for mathematics.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I recently passed and an proficient in the material on both Exams P/1 and FM/2.
I am able to tutor for the Praxis for Mathematics Content Knowledge. I have passed this test myself, getting only one question incorrect. I recommend getting one of the prep guides, working your way through it, and then when you have questions or concepts you've forgotten, we can review the particular topics you're struggling with.
Richard C. passed a background check on 4/21/14. The check was ordered by another user through First Advantage. For more information, please review the background check information page.
After sending a message to Richard, you will be able to order a new background check for $7.99. As part of your tutor selection process, we encourage you to run updated background checks. Please also review the safety tips for hiring tutors.
