Hi parents and students,
Let me tell you a little about myself. I'm originally from NY and have taught all subjects as a 3rd grade teacher from 1989-1995. Later when I went back into teaching and moved to SC, I got my highly qualified status to teach ELA/English-Language Arts at the middle school level. My previous teacher training included both the elementary level as well as English 7-9. I graduated Cum Laude from Wagner College in Staten Island in 1989 with a BSEd, and while teaching completed my MSEd at Long Island University Magna Cum Laude a couple of years later. My passion is teaching reading, but my writing skills are excellent as well. I got perfect scores on the writing portions of 2 different teacher tests. I am certified in SC, NY, and CT, and am working to become certified in MA & PA. Tutoring experience ranges from teaching previous elementary school students at their homes, to middle school students, and even at the college PREP level, when I helped a student pass his GED exam. Since reading is the basis of most subjects, I would also feel comfortable tutoring in social studies. To be honest, while I wouldn't consider math a weakness, math and science are two areas I would not excel in if that is what your needs are. My students love coming to my class and I try to make it fun but challenging at the same time. I have a great sense of humor, but when it comes to hitting the books and getting a student back on track, it's time to get some work done, so you need to be serious that you want the help. I'm not coming over to socialize and watch you eat cookies because I want you to get your money's worth. An hour goes by very quickly and there is usually a lot to cover. If we are done early with what you needed help with, I will gladly help you in any other areas I can or we can get a head start on what lesson is to come next. I'm very easygoing, love children, and would be happy to help you achieve the best you can. I have high expectation not only of my students but of myself.

I am certified in Elementary education (K-6) both in SC & NY, as well as Middle School English. I taught all subject areas in Grade 3 from 1989-1995 in NY.

My strongest points are Reading, Writing, and Vocabulary

As phonics goes hand in hand with reading, which is my strongest area, I can assure you the teaching of phonics is an area where I excel. Whether it is teaching long or short vowel sounds, digraphs, or sound blends, I can be extremely helpful to those that haven't mastered their basic phonic skills yet.
I am a certified elementary teacher in SC and NY.

I have taught reading and writing at all levels. I have 6 years of experience teaching reading to 3rd graders, making sure they had the necessary skills to make the move to 4th grade an easy one. More recently, I have taught 9 years of literature to middle school level students focusing on reading strategies and literary elements, and have tutored reading at the elementary, middle school, & high school level with success.

Great tutor, tooks pains to test/address areas where my daughter needed help Doris was really fantastic with tutoring my daughter. She has tutored her once as of now and will be doing so every week. My daughter is doing well in certain areas and quite badly in others. Doris took a lot of care to test and find out the areas where she needed help. Then customized her tutoring to address these. Very impressive. ...
