Hello! In this age in which standardized testing can appear to “rule all", it is easy for individuals to lose the joy of learning, to lose confidence in their own abilities, and to fall through the cracks in the classroom. My name is Roger M., and I can give you the personal attention that may have been lacking in your academic environment.
I earned my master’s degree in education at Brown University in 2000. Over the past 11 years of teaching, I have had proven success with many types of students, including those who have ADHD, autism, and other learning differences. I have had equal success with gifted students who require more advanced challenges than is typical of their grade level. I am certified (RI-8234) to teach in Rhode Island for grades 1-6, and most recently my students earned 95% proficiency in NECAP reading as well as 85% proficiency in NECAP math. Many of those students earned scores exceeding state expectations.
I have taught ESL (English As a Second Language) classes to both children and adults. I also have experience tutoring individuals with schizophrenia and brain trauma. I have received special training in teaching older students test taking skills for standardized testing such as the SATs. Finally, for the past 5 years or so I have taught guitar lessons for children.
I employ a positive, patient and effective style of teaching. Every individual is unique and capable of maximizing their potential. Visual, verbal, and hands-on learning are an integral part of my pathway to reach any student. This eclectic approach to teaching allows for active, enthusiastic and successful learning.
It would be a pleasure to share this learning experience with you or your child. I look forward to working with you!
I have a master’s degree in education. Attention Deficit Disorder can be a great challenge for both children and adults. One way adults can accommodate a child’s needs is by being open and flexible with what works for a student. Picture schedules, manipulatives and verbal encouragement all play an integral role in helping a child learn.
Hello! My experience ranges from achievement in Algebra as a student to a decade of teaching basic algebraic concepts. Most of all, I enjoy Algebra as a subject because it is like a puzzle waiting to be solved!
I have a master’s degree in elementary education and have taught between one and two students with Aspergers each year for the last eleven years. I am experienced and willing to work with individuals with Aspergers.
I have had 9 students who were on the autism spectrum. In the last few years of my 11 year teaching career, I have had the pleasure of reaching individuals with autism in order to help them in their academic and social growth. The key to maximize success with all children is to understand and accommodate their differences and find what works specifically well for them. A good teacher will find a way for every child to learn what must be learned.
I have been an elementary school teacher for the past decade. Recently, my students scored 95% proficiency in NECAP state testing. Many of my students have achieved high honors, and many have made tremendous growth from “struggling” to “proficient."
I have taught elementary math for the past decade. I have detailed knowledge of Rhode Island State Standards and the skills necessary for student success. Most recently, my class scored a proficiency of 85% in NECAP math. This includes highly proficient scores.
Data, statistics, and science as a whole have allowed us to make empirical and established discoveries about the world around us. The scientific method in elementary school is the building block of study which leads to more advanced academics. The exciting aspect of an introduction to science is the fact that it is logical and satisfying to find evidence to support our claims. Do pennies really turn up heads half the time? Let’s use data!
I have taught correct grammar for over a decade. I have mastered English in general, and have been able to teach hundreds of students the skills necessary to attain and achieve mastery. My extensive background includes not only experience but highly qualified training and performance to yield the strategies to employ successful tutoring.
A command of the English language is an important asset for both academic and social growth. My tutoring includes rules of grammar and pronunciation. It also includes conversational practice, which is vital for tests, jobs, and interaction with English speakers.
Computers are the primary form of communication for millions of jobs, and an integral part of most jobs. The key to mastering computer use is to realize that one does not have to learn about every software program or hardware device. The key to mastering the computer is to exercise strategies which recognize software programs and hardware devices as tools, some of which are more frequently used than others.
Geometry appears throughout daily life, in the shape of our houses, in the schematics of our transportation, and in the mobile devices we own. Though some find it to be an enigma, geometry’s rules and laws are constant.
Though it may seem trivial to some, correct grammar use is an important aspect of professional conduct. Grammar is not only tested in academic assessments but also used in the work environment. Grammatical errors in an interview may be the tie breaker in job interviews.
Microsoft Outlook is a useful tool for communication. E-mails are the primary source of communication in many jobs. I can help you to input contacts, set up filters, forward messages, and efficiently navigate Microsoft Outlook.
Microsoft Word is ubiquitous and useful. It is a tool for writing papers, drafting letters, working on a thesis or even publishing a scientific article. There are countless uses for this program. Therefore, it is the one software program that an individual should know how to manipulate.
Since 2002, I have been helping students to learn how to read. Students can build upon knowledge of phonics, such as blends, digraphs and irregular word patterns. Reading mastery can become a gateway for learning. Once a student finishes learning to read, they can then read to learn!
Hello! I loved Pre-Algebra as a student. I’ve also taught basic algebraic concepts. The rules of Algebra can be simplified into common sense. If you enjoy playing the game “Battleship,” you might know more about Pre-Algebra than you think!
It is absolutely essential for a professional to demonstrate an excellent command of the English language. With "spell check" software, a person may rely too much on a computer to correct his/her mistakes. Therefore, it is important to practice proper English conventions and grammar in order to maintain a high degree of professional appearance.
Learning to read is the first step in literacy, and reading to learn is the next step in literacy. Once a person has acquired the phonics and comprehension skills necessary for literature, he/she can use reading as a vehicle to reach a variety of goals.
SAT Math success depends upon two factors: 1. Your base knowledge of the academics which are tested. 2. Your ability to successfully use strategies to avoid mistakes and/or traps on the SAT. I can provide help teaching you both!
The SAT Reading test is not just about reading skills. It is also about knowing what type of questions a student might see. A student must be able to avoid the common pitfalls of the SAT test, as well as efficiently maximize his/her score for the highest score possible.
The format of the SAT Writing section is extremely specific. Graders of the SAT writing section look specifically for the presence of several items on a rubric. Though there are many types of acceptable writing styles in the workforce, there is a specific type of writing that yields high scores on the SAT Writing section.
All individuals are unique and special. Those with or without diagnoses require a teacher to recognize whether that child is a visual, kinesthetic or verbal learner. It is the responsibility of a teacher to take an open and eclectic approach to accommodate for all different types of students. There are many paths to success. I earned a master’s degree in elementary education.
Spelling words in English can be a difficult task. It seems that there is an exception for every rule of spelling. Be that as it may, spelling can be much improved with a better understanding of the French, Latin, German, Spanish and other word roots. Many challenging words can be deciphered, much like a mystery can be solved!
Studying and preparation are essential elements of high achievement. Having a physically organized set of materials helps mental organization. Proper note taking can make the difference in earning success! I have a master’s degree in elementary education.
Vocabulary is part memorization and part understanding. Since rote memorization is a simple matter of practice, understanding words is often the best way to improve one’s vocabulary. Roots and root words are a fantastic way of dissecting a work into workable parts.
Writing is an important craft to master in both academic and professional environments. Unlike math, writing does not end with the first end product. Writing actually begins with a first draft, followed by edits, revisions and final drafts. Each piece of writing should fulfill its original purpose with the appropriate flow and tone.
