I'd like to introduce myself by saying that I am aware of the need for individualized methods of instruction when tutoring a student in any subject matter. I do enjoy and believe in providing an unconditionally positive and constructive learning environment for my student in order to encourage the lively exchange of ideas needed to expand their knowledge base of a given area. It is also important to act as a guide and to be a positive role model for my student and thereby to hopefully encourage a lifelong love of learning. Now I will move from my teaching philosophy to my qualifications. I graduated from The University of Rhode Island with my BA in Psychology (with a minor in Spanish) in 2001. While there, I served as a Psychology Tutor and Mentor for the URI Talent Development Program.
I have a passion for music, which I've inherited from my family. I began playing the violin in first grade and continue playing in groups like the Ocean State Summer Pops Orchestra and the Rhode Island College Symphony Orchestra. I also sing regularly with the First Evangelical Lutheran Church choir. I hope that this brief bio has conveyed my passion for teaching, learning, and serving students academic needs in a variety of areas. References are available. I have taught many wonderful ESL classes during my teaching career. I must admit that I enjoy teaching ESL students because they share an eagerness to learn that is essential to success in any language.
My approach to learning in this respect depends very much on the perspective and goals of my students. I develop a loose set of guidelines and goals for each student with plenty of encouragement. While I keep track of their improvements and areas that need further instruction. Again, I encourage them to read in their new language right away (or to listen to a CD), depending on their language learning readiness. Basic phonetics are also reviewed using index cards with the appropriate picture matching the sound to be used.
Recently, I have studied the piano for two years at Rhode Island College with a graduate of the Julliard School. I have also taken classes in music theory, Sight Reading, and general music history classes. My performance experiences include the Rhode Island College Orchestra, The Ocean State Summer Pops Orchestra, and various churches throughout the state. I am also a substitute teacher for general music in the public school system.
I am an avid reader of a variety of subjects. I spent most of my college career reading through case studies. In addition, I have written several reports that debate current psychological theories. Now I am working on composing a few self-help and children's books. I have read dozens of books during my lifetime at every grade level through the BA degree. I have the ability to take technical material and make it understandable to a wide variety of students.
Spanish is a fun language to learn. There are many acronyms and other mental tricks to remembering the different tenses. However, the best way to learn is still through the medium of conversation. This is a living language.
