I have been teaching for 33 years in Rhode Island. I currently teach all elementary subject areas. For 24 years of my teaching career I have taught multiple students with ADD/ADHD. when I was teaching in a self contained classroom, and also at a hospital for children with psychiatric and emotional disorders as well as learning disabilities. I also taught students with Autism and Aspergers Syndrome. I taught at the Francis B. Sargent Center and Bradley Hospital before I started teaching for the Bristol Warren Regional School District.

During my career in teaching both special education and regular education I have taught many students that have been diagnosed with Dyslexia. There is not one specific program that I have used, but I have found that through the use of multiple modalities I have had much success with students with Dyslexia.

Handwriting

Since beginning my teaching career in 1980 I have taught Handwriting to students of all ages. I have taught manuscript as well as cursive. I currently use the following programs; Handwriting without Tears for manuscript writing, and Loops and other Groups for cursive.

Phonics

While teaching for the BWRSD I became certified as an Orton Gillingham Instructor. We currently use the SIPPS curriculum for our phonics program. I have been teaching the SIPPS program for eight years. Other than the SIPPS program, as an educator of multiple elementary subject areas and also a Special Educator, I use many different approaches to teaching phonics. I use traditional phonics teaching strategies as well as multi modality approaches.
