I have many years in RI public and private education and have taught all subjects in grades 1-8, as well as, other teachers. I have worked as a Literacy Coach, a history specialist, an ADHD specialist, prep for standardized tests and a gifted & talented coordinator.
I have also taught knitting, sewing, singing and art. I have (grown) children of my own and now grandchildren. I love kids and animals and am ready to help you with your needs, whatever they are and whatever your age.
I am certified for life in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. I can provide many recommendations on request. I look forward to speaking with you.
I have taught many ADHD students over the years, AND I have one of my own who needed the special care that is so beneficial to these kids. I have read the books, attended the seminars and helped families with this often challenging situation. My last teaching job was at a school with a fine reputation for providing strategies for inattentive and hyperactive types of ADHD.
Having studied cultural and physical anthroplogy in college, I have also taught the basics to middle school age students. Additionally, I won a grant to do field work with chimpanzees for two weeks; it was an amazing experience!
Over the years, I have taught every grade, 1-8 in public and independent RI schools. Additionally, I have served as an instructional/literacy coach to assist teachers who want tomprove their teaching methods.
I am an expert grammarian, having learned most of my grammar years ago. My study of foreign languages, Latin and French, cemented that learning. Subject/Predicate, Parts of Speech (including pronoun cases), Subject/Verb Agreement, and all the rest is easy for me to teach. My family calls me "The Grammar Police!"
I have used this program to create newsletters, flyers, invitations, greeting cards, business cards, and most recently, personalized wall calendars with family photos. Also, I have taught elementary school age kids to use it. My husband is a graphic designer, so I have picked up some professional tips along the way!
I have taught reading in many different ways over the years, from the phonetic to look-say approaches as well as the whole word, immersion in literature strategy. I have worked with struggling and gifted readers of all ages from Gr.1 through high school and have had paricular success with the Reading Workshop approach, as well as with Literacy Logs and Journals. I worked with my own children as they were growing up; one was and is an enthusiast, and the other was reluctant but is a reader as an adult!
I am here to help and I love to read!
There are many accepted systems for teaching children to print, and there is one in particular for dysgraphia that I have used with excellent results. Special paper helps, of course, but this particular published approach is also good for children with fine motor and/or sensory problems.
