I'm Lani, a 30 year-old Ohio native, New England newcomer, who has been a professional writing tutor for 12 years. I began tutoring as an undergraduate in English and then after I received my Master's degree (also in English), I went on to become an online writing tutor. I have worked with students as young as 7th graders and as advanced as PhD candidates, but I am comfortable coaching critical thinking and writing skills with all age and skill ranges. I love focused lessons, where a student has a specific question or difficulty in mind, but I also have a lot of fun with more freeform lessons, where a student and I are able to workshop several ideas and I am able to help students grow more confident in their own thinking and writing.
I am qualified (and happy) to tutor writers in all subject areas, but additionally, because I have a liberal arts background and a love for literature, I welcome students who are looking for a boost in the humanities disciplines as well.
I have long been interested in personal career development. I have become familiar with the MBTI and its personality types as a result of my interest and have gone onto research career development as a field. Additionally, being a one-to-one tutor for 10 years has allowed me to foster a unique perspective that most educators don’t adopt so quickly: I have fostered mentoring, interviewing, and assessment skills which I’ve learned to enact simultaneously. Tutorial sessions often turn into informal advising meetings, where students explain their career goals and we discuss their natural passions and acquired skills and how to combine them to achieve the student's goals.
Adding to these more intrinsic skills, I have often worked with students to write/improve resumes, cover letters, letters of intent, and thank you letters, and am experienced in interview preparation as well.
I look at College Counseling as primarily regarding Admissions, where students primarily need support in choosing which institutions to apply for, how to write a quality admissions essay, and how to interview with an admissions counselor. As an experienced writing tutor and mentor, I am both professionally qualified and personally interested in this branch of counseling. I have gone through the process of deciding upon an institution both for my undergraduate and graduate work; I have both written and tutored countless students regarding admissions essays and letters of intent; my experience as a one-to-one tutor has demanded I hone my interview skills.
I have both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in English and have received accolades and Greek honors in the subject. My favorite aspects of the English field are analyzing texts and close reading of literature, but I'm happy to tutor students in all aspect of English and Writing.
I have been a writing tutor for over 10 years and in that time, have tutored countless ESL/ESOL speakers on correct grammar and usage as well as constructing strong arguments. Most importantly, however, is my rapport with non-native English speakers. Beyond grammar, I am able to help students realize that making meaning from or with texts is often something they are entirely capable of and in doing so, I'm much more easily able to help them write and speak well.
I was an English major in college and then went on to get my Masters in Literature. It has been a lifelong passion of mine and while I enjoy tutoring students in all subjects, tutoring in literature is where I feel I really shine as an instructor.
I was a ranked member of the forensics team at my undergraduate institution, Marietta College. My personal events were interpretive, but I gained valuable experience in extemporaneous, informative, and impromptu events as well. In addition to the events in which I participated and those I studied, I also served as a communications coach, for students new to the forensics team.
I have been a professional writing tutor for over 10 years and have helped countless students construct stronger arguments, interpret writing assignments, clarify their ideas, and strengthen their writing acumen overall.
