I have had 15 years experience teaching high school science, including biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology, and forensic science. In addition, I have been tutoring at a local community college for the past five years in such subjects as physics, algebra, and anatomy and physiology. I have been tutoring high school algebra for more than twenty years. I like to help student learn strategies and effective studying techniques, this includes effective note taking, writing effective outlines, etc.
The study of anatomy involves a good deal of learning terminology. I try to help students by teaching them the meaning of common anatomical prefixes, suffixes, and root words. I help students break down what sometimes seems overwhelming material into small manageable pieces.
My subject qualifications are as follows:
1. high school teacher of biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology, environmental science, and forensic science.
2. high school tutor in the above mentioned subjects
3. tutor on college level in general math, algebra, physics, anatomy and physiology
4. I am a very patient tutor- willing to work on a concept until the student understands it
The math portion of the GED involves knowledge of basic arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and applications of each of these areas through problem solving. I help students understand what the math question or exercise is about, and I help them use the most efficient method to achieve the correct answer.
In tutoring, I emphasize reading and understanding the problems, listing to the given information and deciding on the best strategy with which to address the problem. Some topics I can help with include such vocabulary words as points, lines, planes, intersecting lines and parallel lines. I can help with calculating the area and volume of shapes. I am also experienced in writing proofs.
I have taught physics in high school for 17 years. My main focus is helping students understand what the problem is about and finding the best solutions for the problems. When I taught high school, my students did many hands on activities, such as designing catapults, building bridges, and using architectural software.
I have taught anatomy and physiology on a high school level for more than 15 years, and I also tutor anatomy and physiology at a local community college. I am also a chemistry teacher, which can be helpful to physiology students, since much of physiology focuses on the biochemical processes that occur within body systems.
In tutoring prealgebra, I help my students learn how to read a math problem, discern what the problem is asking, and decide on the most effective way to solve the problem. Each student learns differently, and I try to help students find the way that works for them. Some topics I work with include solving equations, absolute value, inequalities, proportions and factoring.
Focus for math SAT preparation is on reading the questions and determining the best strategy to solve the problem. I work with students to help them understand what the problem is asking, writing down the given information, and choosing the most efficient problem solving technique.
My 18 years of teaching science and 30 years of tutoring math have taught me that students learn in as many ways as there are students. Some students are heavy visual learners, some learn best through audio, some students benefit most by tactile learning (learning by doing.) Most students learn best with a mix of the three styles.
I have taken courses at Bridgewater State in student learning, and have attended a number of professional development programs on the subject, but I have learned more about the importance of incorporating a variety of methodologies within my classrooms and in my tutoring sessions than from any textbook or seminar.
I believe the most important function of a tutor is to quickly identify what is preventing a student from learning, and helping him/her find a learning style that will work. Once that is done, the subject lessons become less of a problem.
Knowledgeable, Patient, and Flexible. — My child was placed in advance math. It has been some time since I had pre-algebra. I secured my tutor through WyzAnt.
