I have test preparation industry experience -- between 2000 and 2007 I helped to write and to edit MCAS (Massachusetts state test) 10th grade Mathematics and SAT Mathematics workbooks for a major test preparation company on a contract basis. I also wrote workbook problems and test questions for the company's mock SAT and MCAS tests. At this job I gained an encyclopedic perspective on what shortcuts work for different types of students, and on what types of questions appear on the SAT. I'm inventive, and now I've advanced well beyond my old company's tutoring system. I deliver premium tutoring for high school mathematics students.

My Graduate Record Examination scores were 710 Verbal, 800 Analytical and 710 Logical. I scored 800 on the SAT's Mathematics section in my junior year of high school and I earned 800s on two SAT Mathematics subject tests. I earned Master's degrees in Computer Science and in Political Science from URI.

In my day job, I'm trying to get a company going. The venture probably won't be paying our bills for one or two years.

I have taught Computer Science at URI/Providence and at Bristol Community College. I've done over-shoulder teaching of software packages at the New England Institute of Technology.

I work well with students in over-the-shoulder mode. I was the entire computer help desk department at URI's Providence campus many years ago, seeing perhaps 1500 students at my desk. Students would make sure that I was still working before registering for their computer programming classes.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I will teach you the proper way to perform algebraic operations, but I'm also a shortcuts expert. Some of my SAT tactics carry over into Algebra class.

Algebra 2

I'm an inventor. Some of my Algebra innovations developed for the SAT will also help students in Algebra I and Algebra II classes. I scored an 800 on the SAT Math section in high school. I generally work well with my students.

Fortran

I taught Fortran for four semesters at URI/Providence while I was a graduate student in Computer Science at URI. As an undergraduate I wrote a compilation of student programming errors. My major professor reported that my project speeded up his teaching of the course by 20%.

General Computer

I have a Bachelors and Masters degree in Computer Science. I have taught Computer Science, and I've worked one-on-one with students at help desks.

Geometry

It's not just that I have tutoring experience, but that I helped to edit two Algebra and Geometry workbooks for my former employer. For me, tutoring is about delivering more gain per hour of study: more initial clarity, less staring into space, faster memorization, fewer stumbles and surer basic skills.

Microsoft Access

I have a Masters Degree in Computer Science from URI. I worked on a survey written in Microsoft Access for a University of Rhode Island professor. I once took a test in Access at a temp agency and passed.

Microsoft Excel

I have taught Excel in classrooms. I've tutored students in Excel recently. I've used Excel in my tax preparation work for ten tax seasons, in my engineering work and in my statistics experiments.

Prealgebra

For a previous employer, I helped to write and to edit a Mathematics workbook to help students pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System tenth grade test. Writing a textbook on a subject is a tremendous qualification. The MCAS tenth grade test includes all mathematics taught between sixth and tenth grades, and the MCAS tries to be representative of actual classroom problems.

Precalculus

I scored two more 800s in Mathematics Level I and Level II SAT subject tests. I no longer remember whether the Level II test covered precalculus, but Level II covered a good deal of material not found on the standard SAT Mathematics test.

SAT Math

I helped to edit a certain SAT test preparation company's SAT Math workbook. I also helped to write mock SAT questions for the company's mock SAT tests. I believe that I can deliver better SAT gains with my own new system than with my old company's workbook.

Very detailed and punctual — Paul was able to identify the problem areas and implement a curriculum that quickly got my son on track. He made my son slow down and focus on the algebra while teaching the calculus concepts. Very pleased with the way payment was handled and Paul in general. ...
