Hi, I'm Brendan, and I'm about to graduate from Brown University with a degree in Applied Math and working next year as a software engineer in Boston. I come from a big family, so I'm used to kids, and especially used to helping out with homework (I'm still always my little brothers' and little sisters' first call for help with math). I have about five years of experience tutoring in more professional settings, especially in math and physics, and for the past two years have been an undergraduate TA and then a head undergraduate TA for the introductory computer science course at Brown.

My main teaching philosophy is that things are easiest to learn when they're interesting. I actually don't think it's very possible to learn something and really remember it if you don't care about what it is that you're studying. So I try to explain things in a way that makes them fun, and involves lots of drawings and pictures, or I with more difficult concepts I try to tie them down to something already known, or to things that happen in real life.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I've been playing chess for about three years.

I can start by teaching the basic rules, if need be. Next, it's important to learn the most basic checkmating methods (queen & king vs king then a lone pawn vs king). Then, a student should learn the relative values of the pieces so as to be able to convert a material advantage into one of the earlier mentioned winning endgames. Then the student should become familiar with and practice basic tactics. At this point, most kids will be able to beat their friends and inexperienced parents at chess easily.

With more advanced players, I can teach basic opening theory, ideas of king safety, piece activity, pawn structure, as well as common checkmating patterns.

Python

I TA the introductory computer science course at Brown University. I worked at iDTech teaching computer science last summer, and just accepted a job for next year as a full time software engineer.

SAT Math

When I took the SAT, I got 800 out of 800 on the math section. The things to know are rules of exponents, geometry tricks, and then how to do the tricky problems.
