I am currently a student tutor at Providence College. I have worked both as part of a Freshman Writing Program team member as well as a Writing Center tutor. I work with other students enrolled at PC to improve their writing and proofreading skills. As part of my mission to help students improve, the first few sessions I focus on finding the major areas each student needs to focus on. I find that pinpointing specific problem areas makes it easier to fix specific problems, which will improve writing overtime.
My main goal in each meeting is to have the student take away one habit that will help him/her advance in his/her skills. For example, I am a big supporter of writing in-depth outlines before beginning an assignment, also after the piece is written - I like to read the writing aloud to help students not only catch their problems but also hear where the problems keep coming up.
I understand some students can be hesitant to ask for help in English, reading, and writing because everyone's style is different, which is why I like to employ open communication between myself and the students I work with. No one's writing is perfect, and it is important to know everyone can improve!
