Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught middle school English full for 15 years, which has included time in a 6th grade classroom, classified as Elementary (K-6th) by WyzAnt. Additionally, I have had success tutoring students as young as kindergarten. From my years as Assistant Director at an overnight summer camp for campers as young as 7, I certainly had had much enjoyable experience with elementary school personalities.

English

English is my greatest strength, especially in regards to writing for all purposes, reading comprehension, and instilling sophisticated vocabulary. With over 15 years of experience in teaching English, I have worked successfully with over a thousand students and enjoy their indiviudality. I possess a full grasp of the academic material and, unlike what I see from some other tutors, the experience and ability to transfer that knowledge to students of diverse learning styles by accessing myriad teaching strategies.

ESL/ESOL

I have traveled a fair amount, having received NEH and Fulbright-Hays summer fellowships, and particularly enjoy working with students of foreign cultures and countries.

Reading

Reading is one of my greatest strengths. I use a myriad of teaching strategies, such as learning vocabulary in context and analyzing via literary terms. Instilling confidence is a great key: I recently worked with a kindergartener who was below grade level, yet tested above grade level after just one hour-long session.

SAT Reading

On the SAT, my goal is to incorporate some specific SAT test-taking techniques in addition to a greater understanding of the subject matter which can enhance reading and writing achievement in the classroom.

Writing

Writing is perhaps my greatest strength. In one national Library of Congress writing contest, my students, at odds of 250:1, won honors in eight of nine years.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
