Hello! I am a college writing instructor who has taught writing courses at the Community College of Rhode Island and at Johnson and Wales University. I have recently completed a book about a park in the Adirondacks, in New York. I also write articles for Providence Monthly magazine and Suite 101.com online.

I have an M.A. in English and enjoy helping people with their reading, writing, and other school needs. I believe that reading and writing are both skills that many people can learn to improve for both school and business.

In addition to writing and grammar studies, I also know how to help people with their math problems. I can especially help students with algebra and geometry classes.

Although writing is my main passion, I enjoy playing music as well. I play several instruments, including the piano and bass. I was also a ranked chess player and can teach beginners some of the most important openings, strategies, and end game positions.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

Chess is a wonderful game to play and teach. As a student, I learned many opening and end game strategies, and play at the class A level.

I welcome any age of beginner student. I would love to share some of the game's strategies from the French defense to the Maroczy bind. Please give this game a try!

General Music

I am an all-around musician, who plays string bass, electric bass, piano and guitar. I was an all state bassist and continue to play music with others in the area.

I enjoy rock, reggae, jazz, classical and zydeco.

As a teacher at CCRI, I welcome students of all ages and musical interests.

Grammar

As a student of good writing in English graduate school, I found how important a mutually supportive environment is to produce good writing. Critiques can be both helpful and incisive.

Most careful grammar considerations occur closest to the final product, whether book, essay, or composition. Taking the time to clarify one's perspective helps to provide structural benefits as well.

Piano

Greetings! I am a piano teacher with over 20 years experience playing the instrument. I have formally studied several other instruments as well, including the concert bass and the acoustic guitar.

Music is a wonderful way to learn connectedness, concentration, and dexterity. I employ a teaching method that focuses on core basic skills from the outset, and then develops those skills slowly and methodically until the student's independent and unique abilities take shape.

Depending on the interests of the student, I can gear them toward classical, jazz, or synthesized styles of music. Learning how to play the fingerboard, read music, sight read, work with groups, and perform piano solo are areas I focus on. More advanced skills, such as transposing and improvising, are recommended for a student with more experience.

I have been involved in music training and performance since I studied as a private student myself, and have performed with groups in New England and surrounding states. Today, I teach lessons privately in addition to being a professor at the Community College of RI.

I welcome students of all ages and abilities, and look forward to working with you soon!
