I am a retired special education resource teacher who taught elementary school students with learning challenges for over 30 years. Most of my teaching took place individually or in small groups where I provided individualized instruction according to each child's unique learning needs. I primarily taught reading (including phonics), writing, spelling and mathematics, but at times I also provided academic support in other areas such as science and social studies.

Most recently I have tutored college aged students at a community college and was pleased that all of my students passed their classes.

I often found that students were not successful in the classroom because they needed a different approach to teaching than the one used by their teachers. I have received training in several specialized teaching methods for teaching phonics and spelling, and over my career found that using these methods allowed many students to experience success.

Many students who have learning challenges lack self-esteem and dislike school. I believe strongly that learning should be enjoyable and I try to make my tutoring sessions fun. My first goal of tutoring is allowing my student to experience some success so that he or she will begin to gain confidence, continue to make progress, and begin to like reading, writing, and math.

I love working with children who have learning challenges. Each child has very unique learning needs, and it is always a challenge to me to determine which strategies will bring success. There is nothing that makes my "heart sing" more than telling a child and their parents that my help is no longer needed!

Related Hobbies and Interests:
I enjoy reading, writing, and cooking. I have the reputation of being a very good cook and I especially enjoy sharing the goodies that I bake with my friends (including the students that I tutor if their parents allow it..)!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

Applying to college can seem overwhelming! I am able to coach students through part or all of the college search process, and make the process seem much less daunting.

As a retired Special Education Resource teacher, I have many years of experience teaching writing skills. I am well able to help students complete their student essays that will "WOW" college admissions offices! I can help them generate lists of impressive topics, as well as assist with revising and editing their essays. I can also help students complete and proofread any other written tasks, such as those required on the Common Application or those included on scholarship applications.

As the parent of two college-aged students who has privately assisted other students with their college admission's tasks, I am quite familiar with the entire college admissions process. I can help students with research, organization, and time management.

Over time, I have acquired a fairly extensive library of materials related to selecting and getting into the college of your choice, writing college essays, financing your college education, and winning college scholarships. I am very willing to share those resources with my students.

While the college admissions process can seem frightening and more than you can handle on your own, it can also a very exciting time. Having a college admissions counselor (as early as your sophomore year) can make the process much more manageable... and even enjoyable!

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to learn more about my qualifications as a College Counselor.

Dyslexia

The term "Dyslexia" is very frequently misunderstood. People often believe that it means an individual reverses the letters b and d when reading and writing, or reads words backwards. If a child is identified as having Dyslexia, it simply means that the child has a learning disability in Reading.

There is no typical Dyslexic child. There are a multitude of problems that may cause this disability. A trained specialist can effectively help Dyslexic children learn to read. The method used should match the child's academic profile and learning style by building on his/her strengths, while de-emphasizing his or her relative weaknesses.

As a retired Special Educator with a Master Degree in Learning Disabilities, I have spent countless hours working with children with needs such as these. I have a repertoire of helpful strategies to help these students learn and gain self confidence. For example, I have been trained in the Orton-Gilllingham and Wilson Reading methods, which I have found to be very helpful.

My tutoring of a Dyslexic student will initially involve some informal assessments to determine the child's strengths and needs. Then teaching strategies will be selected that will reflect the results of that assessment. After providing appropriate instruction to dyslexic students, they may begin to make appropriate progress...and learn to enjoy reading!

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a retired special education resource teacher who taught elementary school students with learning challenges for over 30 years. Most of my teaching was provided individually or to small groups. I provided individualized instruction according to each child's unique learning needs.

While some of my time was spent teaching students in a resource classroom, I also spent a good deal of time teaching my students in their elementary classrooms where I worked with them in small and large groups.

I primarily taught reading (including phonics), writing, spelling and mathematics, but at times I also provided academic support in other areas such as science and social studies.

Over my career, I worked with students at every elementary grade level from kindergarten to grade 6 and provided instruction in every content area. I became quite familiar with the school curriculum at each grade level, and am comfortable working with elementary students of any age.

Wonderful so far. — My student likes Miss Doreen and respects her. After her first visit he told his younger sister, "Wait until tomorrow, you will really like Miss Doreen." That let me know that he will work and learn from her just like I hoped. Thank you Miss Doreen. This will be a great experience for him and he will be ready for the challenges of second grade. ...
