Essential factors that foster a successful tutoring experience for both tutor and student include the tutor's knowledge of the content in the designated discipline and the ability to explain that content to another individual (the tutoree) so that it is in understandable terms for the learner. In addition, there must be open communication and a comfortable environment conducive to learning in both the traditional and distance learning situation. This amounts to being available, accessible, and accommodating to the student who is in need of mathematical assistance. I would also add that if the student doesn't understand the material at first then the tutor should be adept at employing multiple strategies to problem-solving situations and providing the necessary differentiated instruction.
I have been teaching mathematics at the high school level since 1982 and have been tutoring mathematics to others since 1973. I have always had an affinity for the science of mathematics and the analytical mind.
I have had experience tutoring in a traditional one on one setting, small group setting, and an online setting through email, live chat, discussion groups, and wiki pages.
Mathematics has always been a passion of mine and I have tutored/taught the spectrum of courses ranging from Elementary (Basic) Mathematics through AP Calculus, AP Statistics, Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Differential and Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, SAT/ACT Prep, and Quantitative Business Analysis. I am adept at incorporating the Texas Instruments Graphing Calculator and/or Scientific/Financial Calculator if necessary to enhance the mathematics.
At the closing of a tutoring session,a student should feel confident that the material was presented in a way that is understandable to him/her and that he/she can reproduce what the tutor has taught him/her in any particular setting. This setting can be in the form of taking an entrance exam for a particular college/employer, preparing a presentation for a job, or getting a passing grade on an assessment based on those particular objectives. My purpose as a tutor is to achieve within the students the mastery of mathematics necessary for them to achieve their goals.
