I've been in public education for 17 years. I taught history and ESL in both middle and high school. I was a Guidance counselor for 8 years in high schools. I assisted in every aspect of the college application process. I've provided study skills presentations, proctored and coordinated PSAT exams. I also have an active license in Cosmetology.

I have tutored, coached, counseled and advocated in order for students to be successful. Ultimately success lies within each individual and a good tutor can help you strive and for your best and achieve it. Students who perform better are students who understand the educational process better.

I specialize in creating results based plans for success with specific goals, anticipated obstacles, strategies to overcome obstacles and a timeline to reflect and refocus goals. I use a comprehensive approach that takes into account one's personality traits and habits to target skills that will be most effective in achieving the desired outcome.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I am certified in RI to teach American History grades 5-12. I taught American History for 5 years in both middle and high school.

American history can be very interesting if put into context of how it impacts our lives now.

I like to make connections to concepts one already understands. Learn how to question history and it becomes a more interactive subject.

College Counseling

I have a Masters degree in education with a concentration guidance counseling. I assisted in all aspects the college application process for a public school servicing as many as 180 seniors. I developed partnerships with local colleges and universities. I've conducted informational sessions for parents, students and faculty members.

I supervised 2 college advisers and a career coordinator in making the college application process organized, effective and supportive to students' desired outcomes.

Most potential college student are unaware of how they look statistically, through data that has been collected on them for years. College applications are so numerous, you must effectively stand out from your competition.

Good grades, excellent recommendations and a high GPA are all important. A skillfully written college essay is your opportunity to introduce your best self to the college of your choice.

ESL/ESOL

I am a certified ESL Specialist, trained in all aspects of ESL. I taught ESL for 8 years in an inner-city high school and middle school. I was teacher-leader, responsible for making sure all legal guidelines were followed to ensure equity for all students. I had one class of 29 students representing 27 different countries and 17 different languages.

ESL students tend to have gaps in their knowledge that can be misread. I try to help ESL students lessen the tell-tale signs that a student struggles with English to allow them the opportunity to make a good first impression that can open doors with many opportunities.

GED

I coordinated alternative programs that were use the same basic requirements to pass the GED.

A GED is an assessment of what you should have learned upon completing high school so you must summarize a 4 year education in one test.

I focus on major themes and events that are weaved throughout your high school education and utilize strategies to help retrieve and retain information.

Social Studies

I currently hold a RI certification in Social Studies grades 5-12. I taught social studies at the middle and high school level.
