I have experience teaching/tutoring across the spectrum of ages, from elementary through university, in a wide variety of disciplines. I am well versed in teaching methodologies and am able to design a style best-suited to the individual student's needs to help him/her learn most easily. I have published both poetry and works of fiction, and have conducted research that has stood up to strict peer review for presentation.

I hold a B.A. in Sociology, with additional work in Anthropology, Linguistics, Political Science and History from West Chester University. I also hold both an A.S.and a B.S. in Information Science and Technology with additional work in Speech Communications and research in women's roles in Native American society at Penn State University. I have done my graduate work in Sociology, with concentrations in Political Sociology and Research Methodologies, at The University of Virginia, as well as additional graduate work in Philosophy, with a concentration in Linguistic Forms, at West Chester University. While at The University of Virginia, I taught classes in Introduction to Sociology and Criminology. While doing my Master's work at West Chester, I instructed introductory courses to Philosophy.

I spent three years working as a Therapeutic Staff Support (TSS) where I had the opportunity to develop instructional methods designed to assist at-risk and learning-disabled students. I then spent a year in the company's Wrap-around program as an instructor where I taught classes of students with a variety of psychological and emotional disabilities in the full range of subjects. The students with whom I worked during these four years ranged in age from 7 through 17 years.

You (or your child), the student, is the most important piece of this equation. Every student is capable of learning and thriving if given the right chances and drives to succeed. Whether plagued with disinterest with the material, a mental block with the subject matter, or, heaven forbid, a rotten teacher, something is standing in the way of success. Let's work together to help you overcome this obstacle so that you can develop better learning methods here, and later in life to follow you through your career.

Anthropology

During my undergraduate studies, I had a minor in Anthropology. I receive 22 credits for my work in this field. I studied both physical and cultural Anthropology spanning the globe. Combined with my experience in Religious studies and Sociology, my Anthropology studies prepared me to tutor/teach this subject matter.

Aspergers

I am a 43 year-old male with Asperger's. I have developed a remarkable set of coping skills during my lifetime that I have put to use in the attainment of multiple college degrees, the founding and ownership of a successful business for close to 20 years, and the development of a variety of coping mechanisms for my two children, both of whom have Asperger's. I have also assisted neurotypicals with their understanding and awareness of those of us with Asperger's through my work with such groups as Focus and the MHA. I may not have an advanced degree in Special Education or Psychology; however, my life experience having lived with Asperger's for 43 years--only having been diagnosed properly a year ago--stands testament to my ability to help others with their achievement of understanding and attainment of goals.

English

English is not only my native language, it is a passion for me. I hold a minor in Linguistics, with 12 credit hours in the History of the English Language. I have a second minor in Speech Communications where I was able to hone my verbal skills and understanding of the grammar and syntax of the language.

General Computer

I hold both an A.S. and a B.S. in Information Sciences and Technology. While pursuing these degrees, I lectured to undergraduates on general computer skills and usage. Additionally, I have 2 (two) years' of experience assisting at the computer help desk at a major university.

Philosophy

I spent 2 (two) years pursuing my M.A. in Philosophy at West Chester University. While there, I assisted with the undergraduate courses and provided research assistance to my graduate advisor. I have a particular interest in Existentialism, with a concentration of study involving Dostoevsky and Nietzsche.

Political Science

Political Science was one of my many minors as an undergraduate at West Chester University. I continue to be very involved in the political world, having worked on a number of political campaigns. I am also very tuned-in to current political events and how they fit into the historicity of the world at large. If that were not enough, I helped to run the 1992 Gallup Poll with the Center for Survey Research at UVA. I have 39 credit hours of undergraduate study under my belt. Additionally, I have assisted professors at the University of Virginia in the publication of political analyses on a variety of topics.

Proofreading

In addition to my past academic research duties, I have 18 years experience as owner and editor of a culinary publication. In this capacity, I oversaw the production of my writing staff. Finally, I have 2 (two) years of experience working as a copy-editor for a local paper.

Public Speaking

While completing my B.S. in Information Science and Technology at Penn State, I minored in Speech Communications. I have spent a lifetime working in positions in which public speaking and oral communication play very important roles. And I have years of experience in the theatre, both in school and in local productions, further developing my oratory skills.

Religion

As a sociologist, world religions became a fascination for me. I devour books on all elements of religions in order to understand their theodicies, histories, and relationships to one another. While at West Chester University, I tutored Sociology of Religion for Professor Jon Cowen.

Social Studies

While an undergraduate at West Chester University, I minored in History. In this capacity, I studied both American and World History. I have also studied cultural forms, religions of the world, political science, culinary, and government to one extent or another along the way. The combination of subject matters both studied and taught--Sociology, Criminology, Religion, Political Science, History, Anthropology--has equipped me to teach/tutor Social Studies.

Sociology

I hold a B.A. in Sociology from West Chester University. I have also done my graduate work in Sociology at The University of Virginia. (I completed my credit requirement, but left without submitting my dissertation.) While at UVA, I served as an associate professor of Sociology, instructing both Introduction to Sociology and Criminology. I have been involved in running the 1992 Gallup Poll with the Center for Survey Research, housed at UVA, where I was central to the design of the research tool used for the study as well as the analyses performed afterward.

Statistics

During my Sociology studies, I earned 24 credit hours in various Statistics and Statistical Analyses courses. I assisted the Center for Survey Research with the 1992 Gallup Polls, both with the preparation of the survey tool and with the analysis of the data. Finally, I am familiar with various statistical packages, such as SPSS and SAS.

Study Skills

I spent the better part of 31 years of my life in school, during which time I consistently achieved the highest honors. This was, in no small part, due to my study skills and time management. As a college professor, I helped my students to develop their own study skills; and I continue to do this with my own children so that they, too, may be successful in their academic careers. As an instructor in a wraparound program for at-risk and emotionally disturbed children and as a college professor, I helped students (middle school through college-aged) develop good academic habits so that they could advance themselves not only in the classroom, but also in life. These involved in-class preparation, classroom participation, the development of an environment conducive to studying, and proper study techniques. Additionally, I developed and taught research methodologies that can be used to better engage a student in the research process and, as a result, improve his/her writing habits and skills.

Writing

In addition to my past professorial duties, I also have 18 years experience as a journalist. In the past, I have published poetry and short fiction, as well. While pursuing my various degrees, I have completed countless research projects and served as a research assistant on 2 (two) occasions, presenting both treatises for peer review.

Excellent! Vincent has proven to be an excellent tutor! He is always punctual, and he has really helped our son understand some difficult math concepts. Most importantly, our son, who initially opposed the idea of even considering a tutor, is very happy with Vincent. That, in itself, speaks volumes! ...
