I have been involved in industrial chemical research (including pharmaceutical and biotech)for over 20 years. I have instructed technicians and chemists alike and have made presentations at major industrial meetings. I have a publication in a leading analytical journal and am co-inventor on a patent in synthetic chemistry.

I struggled with organic chemistry early on, until I realized the key is "don't memorize". Of course, some basic rules should be so well-entrenched that they become almost rote, but organic chemistry is a science and when treated with the same view as physics or math, it can also be comprehended and applied to future problems.

I have helped family members and friends through their chemistry courses, and I consider myself to be innovative and well-tempered while instructing. Most importantly, I have a good sense of humor! I would welcome the challenge of leading enthusiastic learners down the path to a better understanding of organic chemistry.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is the cornerstone of understanding math and science. I attempt to help students learn how to approach problems that require discovering unknown variables from known information, and how to recognize these situations in the many different forms they can take. I am very passionate about teaching algebra, but am more passionate about students learning it and having some fun along the way as they experience how algebra can be "learnable" and even practical.

Prealgebra

I try to make the student's entrance into algebra one that flows from their knowledge of arithmetic. I constantly go back to the principles of arithmetic and show the student how algebra flows from the knowledge of arithmetic he or she already has in hand. This changes the concept of algebra from being something "out there" to a tool that can open new ways to look at math and actually be enjoyable.

Organic Chemistry

I have been an Organic Analytical chemist for over 20 years. I have had experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and industrial fields. I am familiar with most qualitative tests to determine functional groups, and am well-versed in infra-red analysis and HPLC and GC. I have analyzed small molecules (alcohols and glycols) by GC, and large molecules (lipids, liposomes, and surfactants) by HPLC.
