Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

ALL SECTIONS OF THE ACT / SAT

The ACT / SAT are my specialty, I would be very happy to help you prep for whichever test you are planning to take. I like to work hard with my students but have fun doing so!

My method involves reviewing fundamentals for all sections of the test and practicing and reviewing problems one - on - one. I do assign "homework" which we also review together.

I will provide a practice test that you can take on your own time, then score and we will review these together and find ways to improve your test - taking strategy and score. I like to have students take at least 2 practice test for the SAT and more for the ACT.

Getting an SAT or ACT score in the 95th percentile or better can make a huge difference in how your application is review by your preferred college.

Good Luck and Happy Studies!

Algebra 1

I specialize in making algebra easy to understand and fun to learn! Basic algebra skills are the most fundamental and important kind of math for everyone. It is used in almost all professions from architecture to computer programming to dental work to electrical work to zoology!

Helping students understand and apply the concepts of algebra, helping them "see" a path to a solution to each type of problem is my goal.

Algebra 2

I specialize in making algebra easy to understand and fun to learn! Basic algebra skills are the most fundamental and important kind of math for everyone. It is used in almost all professions from architecture to computer programming to dental work to electrical work to zoology!

I love helping people - young and old - learn algebra!

Geometry

Geometry is my favorite subject to tutor! I think it can be a fun subject to master. While concepts in Geometry are abstract, they are also demonstrable and can be memorable.

I like to work through basics and focus on course work, homework or test preparation at the same time. It can be fun, I promise!

GRE

Getting a high score on the GRE can make a difference in your daughter's application process. I scored in the 99th percentile when I took this test.

I like to emphasize fundamentals and practice for this test. After reviewing the general principles of the types of questions, practicing individual questions and explaining the answers, I will provide practice tests to take. Even completing this cycle once will improve your student's score; I recommend taking 2 or more practice test to maximize your student's score.

Microsoft Excel

As a Management Consultant and Computer Programmer, I've built entire information systems based on Excel. Excel can be programmed with Visual Basic to do almost anything, or used in much simpler applications to do financial calculations, maintain lists of employees or act like a calendar.

I'm here to help you get the most out of Excel in a limited amount of time! We can make it fun to use this powerful tool together!

Microsoft PowerPoint

As a management consultant at KPMG, I was trained not just on PowerPoint, but on how to structure effective presentations and hold the audience's attention. As Chief Information Officer at my company, I gave many presentations to audiences ranging from thousands of employees to a dozen board members regularly. Almost all my presentations featured slides in PowerPoint.

In fact, I was hired to develop sales presentations for several product groups in PowerPoint.

I can help you learn the basics and more advanced features of PowerPoint quickly, and I can answer questions for you by email or phone to make your next few presentations flawless.

Physical Science

Science need not be complicated, boring or difficult, but should be easy to relate to and understand. Almost everything in the physical world is explainable and understandable through science: chemistry, physics, and biology.

I enjoy helping students find ways to relate to science in the world around them as well as in the classroom, each in their own way.

Let me help and we'll make progress together!

Public Speaking

As a Chief Information Officer for ARAMARK and Towers Perrin, a management consultant for KPMG, and before that as a Sales Support Technical Analyst at Tandem Computers, my professional career has been all about communicating difficult concepts and making complex pitches to a variety of audiences.

My audiences have varied from my own team members and staff to technologists, corporate board members and very large gatherings of employees at corporate functions. I am very happy "performing" for a crowd.

Since my days at Tandem Computers, I have been professionally trained in techniques, strategies and technologies to give effective oral presentations and produce effective written communication.

SAT Math

My goal for every SAT preparation is to maximize a student's readiness, given their current skill set and the time available.

I excel in helping students "see" a way to solve to difficult word, geometry and math problems, in addition to reviewing the underlying rules of math tested on the SAT.

SAT Writing

The writing and reading tests on the SAT can be quite challenging, but we can work together to understand the tests, problems, and strategies to get your best score.

I specialize in helping high school student "cram" for the SATs. I'd be happy to work with you to develop a plan for your particular need.

SQL

I love teaching SQL, it's an extremely powerful data manipulation language that can be tricky to understand. There are so many applications and systems that employ SQL that it pays to know it reasonably well if you work in technology.

I've had many roles in my professional career where coding in SQL was important and useful. I have a degree in computer science and have worked as a programmer, a systems analyst, a management consultant and as a CIO.

I also have a background in database design and data and process modeling, which really go hand in hand with SQL coding and application design.

SQL has always come easily to me and so has explaining it to others. I really enjoy helping people move up 'the curve' with this technology.
