Greetings!

I am an experienced teacher with an extensive and diverse background. Since beginning teaching in the late 80s, I have taught elementary, middle, high school and college students. I have learned as much from my students as they have from me and my repertoire of strategies, methods, materials, and adaptations reflects that.

I am especially familiar with Special Education students grades 5-12, SAT/ACT prep, developmental college students, and university upperclassmen. In addition to academic acumen, I am attuned to the emotional and social needs of students and know when to change delivery modes/topics/activities.

I love to have fun teaching so I use games, current events, and my sense of humor frequently. Technology will be integrated into most lessons and is a great way for students to hone skills on their own.

At this point in my life I would like to tutor because I know so many kids are struggling in school. While employed at two different colleges, I have seen the blank spots in basic writing and comprehension skills. I have tutored in the past and loved it - seeing a student progress is priceless.

I am passionate about everything I do, and am ready to go!

Standardized tests like the ACT require a specific skill set that students must acquire, understand and master. My background as an English teacher, editor, and college professor enable me to hone in on each student's challenges and work with him/her to develop strategies that will make test taking easier.

ACT Reading

Reading comprehension, mastery of an expansive vocabulary, and the ability to process information in a timely manner are attributes needed not only for a successful ACT score but for college, the business world and beyond. The hi-tech world we live in has provided multiple opportunities for information intake but has also created a new language that is reliant on abbreviations and symbols that do not correspond to academic English. As an English and Reading teacher I am am familiar with helping students learn how to improve comprehension, vocabulary, and analytical problem solving. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to work with students individually, therefore increasing their understanding.

Aspergers

I have a Masters degree in Special Education and a permanent NY State Teaching License for K-12 Special Education. (This license is no longer issued due to specialization but I have a lot of experience with many learning disabilities.) My teaching experience with Special Ed students ranges from elementary through college. I have a wide array of resources, ideas, and am very flexible so that my students get the optimum opportunity to master the material.
I have taught kids with Autism -
from severe to moderate to Aspergers. It is a diagnosis that varies and I am experienced enough to modify lessons to meet each student's needs. And I like to have fun whenever possible- learning shouldn't be dreaded!

Dyslexia

I have a Masters degree in Special Education and a permanent NY State Teaching License for K-12 Special Education. (This license is no longer issued due to specialization but I have a lot of experience with many learning disabilities.)

Dyslexia is incredibly common in the general population and I am used to working with students who have varying degrees of it. Specific strategies I use are very successful.

Students with this disability often fly 'under the radar' and fall significantly behind before they get help. Have no fear- there are many famous, successful, and smart people who have dyslexia and you can be one of them!

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught elementary students in grades K-5. My experiences cover all subject areas as well as students wtih learning disabilities and other special needs. I appreciate that the cognitive and social abilities of young students can vary widely- within the same grade and the same family. My patience, sense of fun and creativity make working with elementary students especially rewarding.

English

Having a solid background in English from the time I started school has made a big difference in my life. Being able to understand what you are reading the first time, taking notes, and correlating that information is critical. Being able to convey thoughts and share what you know via the written word is equally important - and using proper English sets you apart since so many people use text language all the time. I have been teaching different levels of English (from middle school through college) and love helping students see that they can read and write better than they thought. My lessons are tailored to each student, and I believe that having fun is part of teaching. I am outgoing, like jokes- corny especially, and love to learn about my students and their likes/dislikes.

ESL/ESOL

As the world gets smaller our lives get larger- and I love meeting and working with people from other cultures. In my public school career I had students from more than 25 countries.

I have taught Developmental English to ESL college students with great success. Of course, many developmental classes have ESL students in them- so I am familiar with cultural mores and how to address them without offending anyone. Respect of individual identities is critical to a successful educational experience.

European History

European history is a tapestry of many colors- and includes, intrigue, events, the arts, cultures, religions, war, espionage, and just about everything else human beings do! When history is viewed as a story with different chapters that teach different things it is not boring or isolated. I was fortunate to have a spectacular professor in college-and have modeled my teaching on his. You can do well in history if you remember it is simply a fascinating story about all kinds of characters doing all kinds of things in all kinds of places.

GED

The GED is an important step for adults wishing to resume their education. Once it is passed, students have so many opportunities including advancement at work, acceptance to college, and the knowledge that he/she has accomplished a goal that was once out of reach. The GED is best used to move forward - to whatever that may be.

General Computer

Computer knowledge is a necessity in the twenty-first century. I have taught computer courses and am very familiar with the latest technology - tablets, smart phones, laptops and all that they can do.

Most people don't need to know everything- but basic mastery of the most used programs and search engines can make the difference between advancement and stagnation.

Seek the help you need- most likely it isn't as much as you think!

Grammar

Grammar has taken a beating due to technology. But proper grammar is still the hallmark of a solid language arts education. Understanding grammar will improve comprehension, writing, and success in school.

GRE

The GRE is critical to your pursuit of graduate school so it is important that you are well prepared for it. My areas of strength are writing, reasoning, literature, and analytical reasoning. I can also provide test--taking strategies and help improve vocabulary. If you are not confident in your preparation I can help you!

Literature

Literature is the backbone of a solid education. Sadly most courses do not allow adequate time for each work- and students end up reading Cliff Notes and miss out on the roots of exquisite writing.

An often misunderstood belief is that every student will like every book/poem/essay assigned- and of course that won't happen. However, you will still need to read, analyze, and respond to each.

My background as a teacher, professor and avid reader helps me share my interest with others- and at the very least, will enable you to read and fully understand the work you are reading.

Praxis

I am an experienced standardized test instructor- and have worked with the Praxis specifically while teaching at Temple University and Delaware County Community College. I have both materials and expertise in the main test as well as most subject areas. Building a curriculum--for 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks or more--is not a problem and will not compromise the quality of what I teach my students. Additionally, my background and years of teaching students with all levels of test-taking skills enables me to tailor my lessons to their specific needs and the test they are taking. As with all subjects I teach, I prepare thoroughly and am very flexible in meeting times for students. If I did not feel qualified, I would not apply.

Public Speaking

I have been a teacher for 25+ years and require oral presentations from my students, in addition to the creation of original and interesting ways to share information. As a teacher and in my personal life, I do a lot of public speaking and speech writing so there are many ways I can help students improve skills, gain confidence, and become a savvy and successful speaker.

Reading

The mastery of written language is critical to academic success even in our world of hi-tech conversations using abbreviations. If your child is struggling with reading, the sooner the better.

My experience teaching a broad spectrum of students combined with my background in Spec Ed as well as post graduate course work in reading skills as kept me up-to-date.

I am enthusiastic & believe that education should include fun & interesting things too! Every student deserves & will get my undivided attention & focus .

Regents

I am a NY state Regents Diploma holder, was a NY state public school teacher, and am very experienced in working with high-quality test materials and helping students use them to prepare. The NY Regents is the test upon which many state standard tests across the country are based and I am proud to have earned my Regents diploma-and am honored to help others achieve the same success.

SAT Reading

Reading comprehension, mastery of an expansive vocabulary, and the ability to process information in a timely manner are attributes needed not only for a successful SAT but for college, the business world and beyond. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to work with students individually therefore increasing their understanding.

SAT Writing

The SATs are required for many students and a little help in the Writing section can make a big difference. I have experience teaching both high school and college English and would love to assist students improve their writing skills and hopefully see a higher SAT score. Even if writing is not your strong suit, there are strategies and resources available to help you. I am one of them!

Social Studies

I have taught many different sections of Social Studies- World History, American History post 1865, Urban Cultures, and am an avid Civil War buff and reader of historical books. My undergraduate degree is in Political History- for 2 years I took almost no classes other than history! Love it! Know it!

Social Studies is a varied subject- and there are lots of interesting ways to learn the material. This is one of my favorite subjects and I can make it yours too.

Special Needs

I have a Masters degree in Special Education and a permanent NY State Teaching License for K-12 Special Education. (This license is no longer issued due to specialization but I have a lot of experience with many learning disabilities.)

Throughout my 20+ years of teaching I have dealt with virtually every kind of disability/behavior including undiagnosed. I am confident in my ability to work with all kinds of special needs students.

Study Skills

I have taught a college course called "Student Success" that covers many aspects of organization, note-taking, time management, study habits, and general tips and skills to be more successful. This is second nature to me since I was a Special Ed teacher! The rate of success is directly tied to the student's interest in improving - and I do all I can to ensure that everything we do is motivational.

TOEFL

A solid command of academic and professional English is beneficial to those seeking higher education or new residents of the USA who want to go to school, teach school, or pursue professional credentials and goals. Proper speech sets you apart from the majority- including native-born Americans- who have not mastered English. My years of teaching include English in high school and college, as well as ESOL. Making English come alive is enormously satisfying for me and I have a variety of strategies, materials, and lessons that can be tailored to best meet your learning style.

World History

What is more interesting than the world? Nothing! Therefore World History contains all of the most fascinating information available. History is NOT remembering dates, rather, it is understanding a story with many characters and locations- but who are all connected to some degree. If you need help making history come alive for you- I can do it! When you realize that historical figures were people with families, problems, quirks, well, it all starts to make sense- and is more dramatic than any fiction you have seen or read.

Writing

Today's students live in a world where 'writing' has taken on a whole new meaning. Texting has crept into academic work and sentence structure, syntax, grammar and organizational skills are often weaker than they should be. As an experienced English teacher I have a wide range of activities including games and fun (if lessons are boring students lose interest quickly). I love helping kids get their thoughts down on paper and seeing them realize that THEY did it! I am also a trained Special Ed teacher which means that I have tons of ways to get reach kids- visually, auditorially, hands-on, etc.
